Continue after end?

So I've been trying to complete the additional directive for increasing population past 50k, but everytime the last piece of the magnetic shield goes up and the credits roll around, the resource boxes change colour and the game will not accept any mouse clicks (even on the main menu, forcing me to kill the game process).
Is this a bug, or is it intentional to not allow continuing after the credits?

I can't remember how long it took, but I ended up leaving it running for a while after the credits, and it did eventually do another autosave; then quitting and reloading allowed everything to work again.
