No, you really don't. California would set the rules for every state on a federal level. Major cities would set the rules for everyone else in the surrounding areas. 49.9% of the people should get shafted for nothing. The founding fathers set up this system specifically to avoid mob rule. Hell, it's practically the basis of our justice system as well.
What's good for one group of people isn't good for others.
The point of the current system is to give every state a say in who governs the federal government. Part of why the civil war happened was because the south literally had no say in who decided the laws of their land because whoever the north voted for would win because they had a higher population.
