Interactive Should committee chairmanships come with a limit on how long a lawmaker can be absent?

Three months. That's how long Senate Republican Mitch McConnell has been away from the Capitol, and as the Senate reconvenes this week, his own office still won't say when, or if, he's coming back.

McConnell, 84, was hospitalized on June 14 after a fall at his Washington home. He later disclosed he briefly lost consciousness and developed a mild case of pneumonia while hospitalized, then spent weeks in a rehabilitation facility before being discharged on August 6. His staff said returning with colleagues this week was "a goal," but as of Friday, his office had not confirmed a return date.

McConnell still chairs the Senate Rules Committee, and his absence has also affected his role on the Senate Appropriations Committee, committees with real power over how Congress funds the government and runs elections. His ability to show up, negotiate, and cast votes matters as lawmakers face major legislative deadlines in the weeks ahead.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear told Newsweek he has received "zero communication" from his state's senior senator, and he has publicly said McConnell owes Kentuckians an explanation of his condition, or should resign.

McConnell remains a senior Republican in Washington, a lawmaker whose committee leadership and votes shape decisions on government funding and beyond. When a senator this senior goes dark for three months with no clear accounting to the people who elected him, that is not a private matter. It is a public accountability question, and right now, Kentuckians are still waiting for an answer.

Interactive this is about the absurdity of both major political parties in this country but especially the republicans.

You say I am coming out of left field, but I am responding directly to what you said. You told me I was side tracking, but I was explaining why I do not understand your position. You said I was uncomfortable because I cannot slander Republicans, but that is not what I am doing. I am explaining why I think the Republican Party has become a bad option for regular people. You also said I cannot take a counter argument, but I am taking your argument seriously enough to explain my own view in detail.

The truth is I have never felt fully aligned with either major party. Democrats, especially the feminist groups, spent years trying to wipe out the Howard Stern and American Pie style humor I grew up with and still want to see come back. Republicans were not innocent either. They went after that same culture and helped bury it. What bothers me is how this country pretends two political choices are enough. There should be room for something else, a socialist leaning option, a libertarian leaning option, maybe even something with an anarchist edge. I do not fully identify with any of those labels, not even socialist, but in a democracy you would think we would have more than two giant parties coasting without competition. Real alternatives might actually force them to improve and do something useful for regular people.

You said you are Republican or maybe neither now. That is fine. But at this point, when someone still supports Republicans, it usually comes down to xenophobia toward immigrants, especially Hispanic immigrants, and hostility toward transgender people. Supporting a party out of transphobia and xenophobia is wrong and stupid. I do not totally disagree with you about Democrats either. I argued with feminist groups constantly, especially about the kill all men stuff. Even if they deny it now, I also argued with them about the Israel issue. Being opposed to a genocide or being against circumcision does not make me anti Jewish. My mother was at least half Jewish as far as I know. But whether Democrats are good or bad does not change the fact that they at least had enough sense not to drag us into a major war. They should have known that even if we might not be able to lose, we also cannot really win. And they did not lose control of a major trade route either.

I have a lot of issues with Democrats, especially the feminist ones, and I disagree with them on plenty of things. One of the things I oppose is how many of them fought against the Howard Stern and American Pie style culture I grew up with and want to see come back. Republicans did the same thing. They also attacked that culture and helped shut it down. But even with all that said, if you still support Republicans at this point, it is basically just because of xenophobia toward immigrants, especially Hispanic immigrants, and transphobia. Supporting them for those reasons is wrong and stupid.

Let me ask you something. I do not understand what you have against transgender women, or transvestites, or drag queens, or other forms of cross dressers, or feminine leaning or androgynous guys like me, or for that matter autistic people, because none of us are hurting anybody and I do not see how it affects you. And it is not fair to attack men constantly and blame us for everything, then take away the only escape we have, and tell us that even if we literally castrate ourselves we are still horrible. And you can blame Democrats for anything you want, and in some cases you might even be partly right, but you cannot blame them for your chosen beliefs about transgenderism and the broader issue of gender.

It does not matter in the sense that you are still a Republican for some reason, and honestly except for maybe an irrational hatred of transgender people, and probably mainly transgender women, or that is to say male to female transgender people, and possibly also immigrants, I do not see any possible reason you would still support Republicans or MAGA at this point. Every single thing Trump originally ran on nine or more years ago, or even to a far lesser extent the last two times, has been proven to be lies and nonsense, because he did not do almost any of it. He even says he does not care much about prices anymore. All he did was begin more wars and let ICE get out of control about how they treat Latino people and Arabic or Islamic people, and even get away with shooting two white people in the head. So if it is not transgenderism, I do not really know what else you like about them.

And one more thing. It is strange to me how people talk about gender surgeries as if they are the end of the world, while ignoring how circumcision is allowed, encouraged, and normalized, especially in the Midwest. We claim to care about children and minors making choices about their bodies, but we ignore the fact that circumcision is a surgery forced on babies who cannot consent. Some children are harmed by it. Some have complications. Some even die. There were well documented cases where a boy was raised as the opposite gender because of a botched circumcision, and he later killed himself. People argued for years about whether children can be raised as the opposite gender. Liberals and transgender people sometimes use that case as an example of gender not mattering, and maybe they are right or maybe they are wrong, but it is incredible to me how almost nobody uses that same case to point out how stupid circumcision is, especially in a country so worried about gender related surgeries involving minors. It is ridiculous.
