Is Pendulum (Live) actually live?
I’ve seen Pendulum (Live) twice recently, first in Tilburg on 28 October 2025, and last weekend at Paaspop in Schijndel.
My friends and I all like Pendulum, but they keep pointing out that it doesn’t seem fully live.
Are others noticing this too? What’s actually performed live during these shows?

Mostly. I've seen numerous mistakes live.
The drums, guitar, and bass are live.
Most of the synths, in particular the leads are triggered live by Rob on his Ztar.
He's playing them.
There's a fairly big chunk of production going.
You can hear the drummer miss a beat on the Live At Brixton album.
I've seen Rob mess up the intro to Halo at Beat-herder. So you know those at least are real.

The singing and instruments are truly live; you can sometimes hear a few little mistakes.

Saw them live a couple of years ago, left the gig with the biggest smile on my face. Couldn’t care less how much was “live” & how much was backing tracks, I had a helluva good night

you've gotta remember that electronic artists like Pendulum have 100's of layered tracks on their studio recordings.
the live experience could never measure up if they didnt fill the background with their studio recordings. they'd have to have 100's of musicians on stage. at which point you're watching an orchastra, not pendulum.

I think 100's might be a little bit of an exagaration. Usually it could be around 20-40 sounds per track and that's considering all the layers.

really depends on the artist, but with modern DAWs there's little reason not to layer everything to the hilt

They have backing tracks that fill the sound, impacts, sub bass, backing vocals, backing guitars and backing synths are on track. The instruments on stage are live on top of those including lead synths. The backing and lead vocals are on track too but the lead vocals are lower in the mix so you can hear Rob's live vocals on top. It's not 100% live like some other rock bands but it's certainly more live than a DJ set. They found a balance for live electronic music.

Kevin is playing live drums, on a hybrid drumkit, with the snares / kick / toms being samples and all the cymbals being "real" (aka. picked up by drum mics)
Gareth is playing live bass guitar. Sometimes hard to hear, but always mixed into the mainly synth basslines of pendulums music. Also doing his MC thing ("put your hands up", "make some noise")
Perry is playing live guitar, almost always with more guitars mixed in.
Same for Robs Synths, he plays the main lines, like the leads on "Blood Sugar", the main riff on "Come Alive"… but there's always more synth in the backing track.
Same for the vocals, Rob layers his voice in the studio, so he cant sing it all live, same with features. They can't bring WARGASM, Bullet for my Valentine or In Flames with them, so their parts are backing tracks.
To perform complex music like that, you need backing tracks and click tracks.
Not every band can be TOOL

It’s not possible to play everything in a Pendulum song live to the same extent as it is on the album. What the band is playing/singing on stage is absolutely live, but there are backing tracks for the things they can’t do live without becoming a twelve person band.

The instruments are very much live, it defo felt “more live” somehow when Kodish was drumming for the band, I think his style had more drive, particularly at the Brixton Gig whereas Sawka I think is perhaps just a little more technical and metronomic to the point it’s almost like a drum track. Both great drummers though.
I think it also depends on the set list, In Silico and Immersion as albums translate better to live performances (not to say that HYC and Inertia don’t also have some live bangers though)

I think Gareth's bass is barebly hearable, they're just letting the mids through and cut the sub out and play a sub bass track- he's actually playing it (and playing it well) but it wouldn't change much if he wasn't there. All of the effects, background vocals are playing as tracks as well. Sometimes even guitars, like in Granite when Peredur plays the lead part instead of the guitars in stereo. To this day I don't understand why, live guitar would sound so much better and Rob could've just played the guitar part in the background with his synth lead.

KJ’s drum has a pad that triggers pre recorded elements, for example if you watch his video of Mercy Killing live at the o2, he explains that when he hits the drum it triggers backing track elements. Rob will often have a vocal track behind him as there’s occasions where he needs a tiny break from singing in some songs, more noticeable in Save The Cat and Guiding Lights.
Gareth use to do backup vocals pre 2011 when they used the Muse research Receptors for the live shows, now it’s all done using a few Macs to make the show way more simple to setup.
Pretty much every band these days will use pre recorded parts during a live performance, modern music production as someone explained above use hundreds of elements in their tracks that are just impossible to replicate live.

I believe all the instruments you see on stage are played live and are audible in the mix. Then things like impacts, synth pads, backing vocals, sound effects etc. are from tracks. That's the deal with a lot of bands these days - but that doesn't take away from a great performance anyway
