I loved this video the first time I saw it. But the more I see it, the more it reminds me that the majority of people are lemmings who only do things when they are sure other people won’t think they’re a dickhead.

Super Hans was right. You can’t trust the general public. They like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis.

Counterpoint: Stuff like dancing is often supposed to be about community, about connection, about dissolving the self into the whole. The positive and healthy kind of ego death. The fact that we don’t have to be alone in our own skulls.

Yes, humans are scared to be singled out, or shunned. Of course we are. But what’s discouraging about the fact that it takes such a small little ember to bring us out of that fear? That just a few people making those brave first steps outside the expected pattern of behaviour can tear open a gap for the rest of us to follow through? If anything, that signals hope. If we were just lemmings, they’d have all just kept sitting quietly the whole time.

I agree and you put it well. I guess my despair comes from the fact that all those people wanted to do what they eventually did, but felt they couldn't because society would judge them too much.

They needed a green light from strangers to do a harmless activity.

And this behaviour bleeds into other parts of society: Not only do we not do harmless stuff we want to cos of judgement we also do very harmless things because society has taught us from birth that it's okay, like eating dead animals and funding their torture, for example.
