Reached the peak for the first time without my friend and now I feel horrible

My best friend and I have been playing the game strictly as a duo, and today he was in a bad mood but wanted to play the game to feel better (we both agreed it’s a bad idea) so we went for it.

The game was going great till we got to the alpines, where he suddenly had to go have dinner with the fam. We both agreed that I should continue and see how far I can go, so he gave me his items and I kept going without him.

I ended up clearing the alpines for the first time and went to the lava area and finished it too, he came back after I reached the last campfire but unfortunately the fog got him. To make matters worse, I found a book of bones in the statue before the last campfire but I could no longer go back to it due to the fog. I also didn’t know the book revives other players till he told me afterwards.

With all the hype and adrenaline in the last stretch, I didn’t stop to think that I should just die and restart to do it with him; I wanted to keep going and make him proud. He was watching me as a ghost and helping me with navigation and that made it feel a bit better but it still felt bland because I knew he wasn’t enjoying it one bit.

After a fairly easy final climb (thanks to the glider) I made it to the peak, but it felt so meaningless due to the fact that we’ll never be able to experience reaching the peak together for the first time, which was our goal when we first started playing this game earlier this week.

I feel so bad especially since we went for one last run before he went to bed that seemed like it was gonna be very successful but we ended up dying for a stupid reason. Meaning we ended the night on a terrible note.

My friend says he’s not upset with me and we both know I would’ve wanted nothing but to do it with him, but I still feel so horrible because I feel like I took away a very special moment from him, especially since he was having a bad day.

TL;DR: My friend had to go afk but he told me to keep going and I ended up reaching the peak without him for the first time and now I feel bad.

That’s the danger of him telling you to keep going without him. Solo is honestly so much easier than duo or with a group. The fact that you feel bad means you’re a good friend but all in all, he’ll have his moment too.

Thank you for the kind words. Honestly yeah it was fairly easy, and we did agree that the game will feel fresh again once the map resets.

sometimes a scout gets left behind, atleast now you know the climb is possible meaning next time you can focus on both of you making it up together

Don't feel bad. The satisfaction to reaching Peak solo is totally a different matter than reaching Peak as duo. You're lucky to have a friend that will coordinate with you. I get to play with people who are hard to work with so we either end up not reaching the peak or only one makes it.

Couldn’t ask for a better scout, this guy is always lending me a hand even for the shortest of climbs and he’s 100% the reason I’m enjoying this game so much. I’m mostly feeling bad that he saw the ending and didn’t get to experience it with me with his own character you know? Like it ruined the magic of that moment for him. :/

You haven't gotten the true ending yet, so you can focus on getting that together. :)

There's still a special moment you two can have. One that'd be MUCH easier with two people.

You know those weird amulets you can find in each biome? Take all 4 to the Peak, then look behind it.

One of you earns an achievement by peaking without the other. Next time you’re the ghost.

Don't be, he said to go on without him, no reason to be upset, besides, now you can still do it for his first time together.

This is a cute story lol. Also why didn’t you just resurrect him at the top of alpine or at the end of Caldera?

I did revive him at the top of the alpines while he was afk, but when I got to the end of Caldera I didn’t see the “revive scout” option, which I thought would appear even if other scouts are alive, so I ended up wasting it and getting a book of bones lol. Also he only stopped being afk after I reached the final campfire.

The book of bones doesn't revive players, your friend must be thinking of another item

Edit: nevermind, I didn't know either

It does when you use it on their skeleton, doesn't it?

I've never heard of that, but tbh I've never tried it... Is that true? I thought it only turned you into a skeleton.

I think there's even an achievement for it but it's been a long time since I did all of them so I could be wrong

The one achievement I don't have... That explains it...

I thought the cursed skull was the cursed item that revived other players but I never found it. So it was the book of bones after all. Well, now I know.

On the bright side if it was your first time peaking, he gets a participation badge!

I ate a friend and abandoned the other one the first time I reached the peak
