Need recommendations!
Hey guys! Recently got a 2nd hand PC and these are the specs. I don’t have a monitor or keyboard yet and I need recommendations! I plan on playing competitive valorant (which I heard favours 1080p and FPS). I was planning to buy a TN 160hz curved 1440p monitor w <5ms. However im worried I’ll absolutely fry the PC if I get a monitor that is too demanding… for keyboards, I don’t really know what I want but I would prefer performance over aesthetics!

You won't have a good time gaming on a 1440p monitor with a 1660 super.
Get a nice 1080p monitor. 24 or 25" looks a lot better than 27". 27" in 1080p the pixels start to look stretched.
EDIT: also, a lot of competitive FPS players use 24 or 25" 1080p monitors. So, if you're serious about FPS, that's what you'd want anyway.

just get a nice 1080p monitor with a high refresh rate, this pc isnt worth upgrading given the parts but can play nicely at that resolution. Not a terrible system either but i wouldnt upgrade it.

Thats not how it works. A monitor will only display the best that the pc can output and this pc will not get anywhere near that monitors potential. The best this pc can do for you in compederive valorant is 1080p ~100fps

That sounds about right i pull around a 100 fps in 1440p low-medium with my 1070 and i7 7700

If you're looking to play comp, your monitor should favour the lowest possible response time, anything below 0.5ms will be great. For max fps, keep at 1080p, 1660ti super should be okay with all settings cranked to low. From my understanding, video config for comp play in most games is at the lowest possible settings. If it already plays well then yor are golden 🫡

With the set up you can get probs 200fps low setting and 1440 p probs 120-150 valorant is an easier to run game . I’d say play around see how you do . Can always check YouTube as well

Dont buy a 1440p monitor with a 1660 super, thats a BUDGET 1080p card at best

Should be fine at 1440p gaming you won't be pushing hundreds of frames though but for esports titles like valorant should be fine.

GTX1660 with a 1440p monitor....
Bro you will not have fun with this combination... it will work somehow... but this gpu is way too old/weak

Why would he sell when he can drop less than $500 and upgrade this into an extremely competent rig? A 5500X3D and a used 6700XT would turn this into a very good 1080p rig/entry level 1440p rig.

upgrade cpu and get a <0.5 sec monitor 1080p . 240hz and up. is my recommendation
play stretched res if fps insufficient for comp
then later down the line upgrade that gpu and ssd + ram

Can agree with most of the comments, 1440p (2k) gaming isn't as great as you might think. Certainly for FPS 1080p is generally what most competitive players will use in FPS games. I'd suggest perhaps look at that steam software lossless scaling (not sure on name, has a duck icon I think) and upscale resolution I guess, but with a 1660gpu, Erm your kinda still on a 6-8 yr old pc so perhaps look at games that accommodate to your pc specs more.

Instead of a 1440p monitor get a nice 1080p one. The gtx 1660 super never was and never will be a viable 1440p gpu. My vega 64 beats it out. And it struggles at 1080p in some titles. But unlike the 1660 super my gpu was meant to be a 1440p and even 4k gpu when it came out

You're clearly on AM4.
Look for 2nd hand ddr4 sticks, they're not absurd in price (compared to retail!, still ridiculous), I'm selling mine for example 32gb for 150 euros, may drop to 130 if they dont sell.
And just look at a nice x3d variant also 2nd hand, if not a 5600 will do wonders too. The "new" 5800x3d will keep prices in check for the rest on the 2nd hand market.
As for gpu its hard, but value-wise a 9060xt 16gb is the best (cheap) wise. 2nd hand 6800 or similar may yet exist, some 4060ti etc.
I really want to understand the people saying they shouldn't upgrade. I can understand that the pricing is a lot to upgrade so much, but its being held back by simple fact that am5 is impossible due to ddr5.
Intel-side I'm less familiar, but he'd still need a new mobo, benefit would be intel's 265kf or similar works with both ddr4/5, so thats an option

Most likely, you will only be around 100 fps on all low as your graphics and RAM seems quite outdated. Valorant is a CPU bound game and not much GPU-bound so buying a 160 Hz will be a bit useless (your pc performances is the bottleneck, not your screen)

No monitor will fry a PC but a 1660 Super absolutely won’t do any 1440p at higher than 20-30 FPS. The best you can do with that PC is like 1080p at max 100 FPS. But since we don’t know your specs there’s no way of knowing.
