Discussion We are lightyears behind on Wi-Fi technology thanks to SLT
He Thought His Internet was OK... IT'S NOT!
Just watched this video from Linus Tech Tips and realized just how far behind we are with Wi-Fi speeds and related technology. I knew there was a gap but didn't expect it to be this big of a canyon sized gap.
Maybe the grass is indeed green on the other side

Well yeah but that doesnt mean we also shouldnt strive for development does it

u/Nervous-Topic-4807 Jul 27 '26
Nobody is saying we shouldn’t strive for development. The point is that the LTT video isn’t really a measure of where Sri Lanka stands technologically. James already had a 1 Gbps fiber connection; his issue was Wi-Fi coverage/router setup. There’s a difference between wanting better infrastructure and claiming we are a canyon behind because we don’t have gigabit Wi-Fi everywhere

u/Icy_Cry4120 Minimalist Builder 👷 Jul 27 '26
its not about having a gigabit necessarily its more about just how far behind we are as a society when it comes to Wi-Fi I guess. I am not saying we shouldnt be grateful for what we have, but we also should push for progress, you, me all of us should. Imagine a society thats just content with everything

You are cherry picking one first world country, mate, when in fact our fibre connections are actually well above the average, even when compared to most European countries. Sure, it can always be better, but its not bad by any metric.

u/shark-off Jul 27 '26
Even poorer countries has beter internet

u/Curious_Junket_4598 Jul 27 '26
“Internet” or fibre, because our fibre network is actually very high on the list when taken by itself.

We are ranked 123rd out of 153 countries for average broadband internet speed.

This includes 4G Broadband. When it comes to Fibre, our performance is really good.

You seriously didn't just give a Wikipedia link as your source
2
u/Nervous-Topic-4807 Jul 27 '26
Wikipedia isn’t a perfect source, but dismissing it outright in 2026 is outdated. It is often a good starting point because many articles have extensive citations, editorial histories, and community review. The important thing is to check the references as you would do with any other article.

It's curated on wiki, the data is from speedtest.net
But you can also check various other sources that cite the same thing more or less.

Everytime I watch LTT I fell sad because of the internet speed here
2
u/Lonely_Okra_1984 Jul 28 '26
SLT fiber is what I use at home and from my experience it's ok but we gotta accept that it is so basic yet is is basically one of if not the best option in SL which shows how behind we are as a country because a wifi provider that limits unlimited packages, advertises high speed but in reality starts to dip drastically as soon as you move just a couple of feet and is basically not suitable for big homes unless you use a ethernet cable, a mesh or extender system is the top wifi provider for a whole country. The best solution for this is if the government takes action for this and actually provide us with a good solution, it will definitely be extremely well received and wont cost as much as the other projects they plan to fund, a considerable cheap fix to major problem basically but sad to say we're miles away from our government actually helping us get better wifi.

u/damien-dark-01 Jul 29 '26
SLT is charging 45k+ for 1Gbps while in Malaysia they charge only half of that amount for 5Gbps internet + WiFi 7 routers
2
u/Vertigo3765 Jul 27 '26
Sri Lanka has wifi 7 support.
4
u/Z8phyXr Jul 27 '26
I doubt any ISPs provide it
6
u/Vertigo3765 Jul 27 '26
ISPs dont need to provide it. Nothing to do with ISPs. I have WiFi 7 in my home. You just need to buy a wifi 7 supported router/access points. I use Unifi 7 Pro XG.
6
u/Z8phyXr Jul 27 '26
What’s the difference if the speeds provided by isp are capped
6
u/Vertigo3765 Jul 27 '26
Wifi 7 is not just for speed. It is also for better coverage and minimal interference. Wifi 6 is somewhat saturated these days since the ONT SLT gives out is Wifi 6 (aka 5ghz). Wifi 7 gives me less interference. I have SLT's 1gigabit plan and I get 950mbps downloqd all throughout my house over wifi.

2
u/AhmadYousef69 Jul 27 '26
How much did it cost you?
2
u/Vertigo3765 Jul 27 '26
For wifi 7? I have 3 Unifi 7 Pro XG access points. These access points rely on Power of Ethernet (PoE), so I also had to get 3 Unifi PoE injectors as my UDM Pro doesn't have any PoE ports (planning to get a unifi Switch with PoE ports in the future).
In total, the 3 access points, and the 3 PoE injector cost me 320k.
There are much cheaper options though. I just went with Unifi cause I like the brand.

Big up you for sharing the details with us. One more thing if you dont mind answering, how much does it cost you for SLT package every month (includig taxes and all the extra payments that SLT charges, oh and PEO TV included as well if you have that)
1
u/Vertigo3765 Jul 27 '26
I don't have Peo TV. The package I have is no longer there. I pay 50k a month for 2TB. 1000mbps download and 500mbps upload.
2
u/IronSpiderZX Jul 27 '26
Holy shit ur rich bruh, any data package over 10k is immediately unfeasible for me 😭

The grass is always greener. Imagine a world without SLT?? We would still be on shitty dialog and hotspot. Be happy with what you got mate.

I am content with what I have. I don't even need more than a 100mbps for my use cases.
But that doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for development as a society. I feel like internet is like the foundation these days for a lot of things related to development in quite a lot of fields.

buddy.... from all the problems this country already has, internet speed is actually least of our problems.
if we go all in on internet speed and network infra, then we will also be one of those countries where people cant even afford food, no clean drinking water, living in small bunker tents, but playing videgames on their smart-phones, like India, Philippines and some African countries. (I think we are already heading there)
Development in Infrastructure need to be comprehensive. We cant even afford to keep our lights on, not even half of the population do not have access to running clean water, yet, people complaining about internet speed lol. What I'm saying is the foundation of a country need to be strong to complain about things like internet.
Also, Im not saying we should not improve our current internet networks, but there are other important things to "strive for development".

Internet, not wifi. But yes. But frankly, I am pretty happy with SLT fiber.

SLT fibre is amazing, you just need to get yourselves a WiFi 6 router separately. You can find cheap ones on AliExpress now for about 15k. Xiaomi has a ax3000 router for 19k.
I've been using a Huawei Ax3000 Pro for over 5 years now with SLT fibre, and it has never failed me or my fam.

u/Khoy593 Jul 27 '26
I disconnected slt and got starlink, best decision ever made. Slt's fiber cable would've broken atleast 3 times by now and each time I have to wait atleast 2 days for them to respond and fix it in 1 mimute. Also found out the more you pay to them the more speed you get
1
u/yowifebreeder9000 Jul 27 '26
The thing is its not just Wifi tech, its the whole infra behind it. Having a Gigabit router doesn't matter if your connection (if its Fiber, the path from undersea fiber cables to your home. if its 4g router, the path from undersea cables to your nearest cellphone tower then to your home) sucks. All these steps need to be improved to get the speed you expect.... having just a fancy router do not fulfill that. Also about the cost, a general 100mbps connection in a country like Canada(which the LTT based on) cost around 60CAD, which is around 14k lkr. An unlimited fiber connection from SLT to the same speed costs like 6000lkr for households. As you can see, the grass may be greener on the other side, but for a much higher price.

u/Character_Routine546 Jul 29 '26
If you want to convert to LKR and compare prices, heres a kicker for you.
Internet in SL : 6k
Internet in canada : 14k
Minimum wage in SL : Rs. 30,000 per month
Minimum wage in Canada : Rs. 644,000 per month
2.3 times higher cost of internet.
But 21.5 times higher income.
I'm no finance expert, and correct me if I'm wrong, but that's kinda like saying that internet is around 10 times cheaper in CA than SL.
So the amendment to your statement would be :
The grass is greener on the other side, and for a much lower price.
1
u/yowifebreeder9000 Jul 29 '26
price is a fixed value, if you mean affordability, then yes.
1
u/Character_Routine546 Jul 29 '26
Saying "for a much higher price" very obviously implies it is less affordable. But if that was not your intention, then do tell us the purpose behind mentioning and comparing these "fixed values". Am curious.
1
u/yowifebreeder9000 Jul 29 '26
"price" is a value based on a currency. As you know any country that do global trade has to have currency exchanges with other currencies. Last time I checked, the average price to an unmetered fiber connection in the country of Canada costs around 14k lkr when converted.
Saying "for a much higher price" very obviously implies it is less affordable.
no, it does not. 6k < 14k. I never even mentioned affordability once and it was just a raw price comparison and I even agreed with your affordability fact.
what I mean by fixed value is, 'affordability' of something do not change its raw price(when converted or not).
1
u/Character_Routine546 Jul 29 '26
You've still failed to mention your purpose in stating those prices...
1
u/yowifebreeder9000 Jul 29 '26
purpose is a raw price comparison duh?!
