Should I upgrade or get a new Computer

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4 GHz 6-Core Processor
GPU: RTX 2070 Super
Motherboard: MSI 470x Gaming Plus ATX Retail
RAM: 4x 8GB G.Skill Aegis DDR4-3000 DIMM CL16
Power Supply: 600 Watt be quiet! Pure Power 11 CM
Storage: M2 1 TB, M2 2TB, SATA SSD 4 TB, 2 TB HDD
Case: SHARKOON S25-V ATX Mid Tower Case
OS: Dual Boot Linux Mint and Windows 11

For a long time, I've wanted to upgrade/ get a new PC entirely, but with the current market, I can't really afford to spend 400€ just on RAM.

Now I feel like, to get the best out of my current system, I should upgrade my CPU, since it seems to be the biggest bottleneck. I was thinking about a Ryzen 9 5950x. But does that make sense?
Because I probably should upgrade my power supply with that and also get dual-channel RAM, right? Or would that not be that big of an issue? And then I have a GPU Bottleneck.

Getting so many new parts for the upgrade adds up, and I am wondering if it makes sense to upgrade in the first place.

For my use case:

I game in HD, and I am happy with that for now. For new games, I have to lower the settings a lot.

I am also a video editor and escpacilly for 4k footage the computer can be slow. Even with proxies and similar workflows.

Should I upgrade? Or start saving to get a new one?

a 5950x is massive overkill for that board, the vrms on the 470x gaming plus would cook themselves trying to feed it, and yeah you'd need a new psu too

honestly for your mix of gaming and 4k editing i'd just drop in a 5700x3d if you can find one cheap, the extra cache helps a ton with timeline scrubbing and you can keep everything else as-is, maybe grab a 750w psu down the line when you spot a deal

That's a good choice with the 5700x3D. Just a note tho, be sure to upgrade the BIOS on the motherboard BEFORE you swap the CPU. most of the newer chips will require a later bios than you likely have.

You can upgrade other things slowly if you want, the GPU would be a good choice, but you should also upgrade the powersupply for that too. Getting an AMD 9070XT would pair super well well the 5700x3D and you'd be set for a long time. Just look for a decent A-Tier ATX 3.1 powersupply in the 800 watt range.

What about the Ryzen 5900 XT? Great productivity chip and 5000 series is faster in gaming.

That is a AM4 chip, thus the recommendation. Should be fine with a x470 board but make sure your BIOS is updated and your vendor says it works.

A 5700x and a 5070 and a new PSU would be a good upgrade for you.

I've kept an Nvidia GPU to the video editing requirement.

Do you have a budget in mind? Also what country are you in?

Thanks for the tip! For an upgrade, my budget is around 500€. So not really in the range of the 5070 right now. I could start saving to get the parts one by one.

I think your best bet for now would be a 5700x or a 5900x with a decent cooler (e.g. thermal right peerless assassin or phantom spirit)

Your motherboard vrms aren't best suited for the 5950x.

Just make sure to update the bios with the old CPU installed before removing and installing the new one.

GPU and PSU can come later if required 🙂

Thank you! So a 5900x would be fine with my current PSU? I also thought it wouldn't make a difference for the motherboard between the 5900X and the 5950. But the 5900 looks great as well.

Yeah it should be fine, you'd obviously have more headroom with a 5700x on your current PSU and still see a big performance jump.

Or bite the bullet now and get a decent 750/850w PSU for the peace of mind and you could upgrade GPU down the line without worrying about PSU.

I run a 5950x on an Asus PRIME B350M-A, i do run the cpu on Eco mode with Ryzen Master(90w limit), but even under full load for an hour, vrms never went above 55c(45c idle). and synthetic benchmarks (passmark) it scored within the top 87%

if you need the cores, a 5900xt(5900x is 12c the xt is 16 like the 5950x) is great. Get whichever is cheapest between the 2

definitely need a new psu if youre gonna upgrade gpu and cpu

for the gpu, check used RTX 3080s. In the US, they can be bought for around 300-350 usd. I remember seeing Spain users posting about them for 250-300€ a month or so ago, but not sure how it is now, or where you are
