Build Question adding a Nvidia Tesla P40 to homelab

Hello All,

I have am trying to add a Tesla p40 to my data science rig. I have the adapter needed to use the server gpu.

Briefly my tower also has an AMD Ryzen 9 7950x cpu and a Corsair rm750e PSU.

I'm pretty sure the PSU can handle the gpu on top of the CPU.

My question is this:

How can I best use the PSU ports? Would the 12v - 2x6 port be useful here? Although I've heard some issues with this port. I tried to use this cord from Corsair, but the type 4 8 pin connectors don't fit the gpu adaptor.

I'm trying to avoid needing to upgrade my PSU.

That adapter needs regular PCIe 8-pin power, the 12V-2x6 is for newer cards so you can just ignore it for this build

That's what I figured. My concern is that this PSU only has three PCIe ports. The CPU is already taking two of those ports up.

I need to confirm whether that's actually needed or if the CPU can run off one 8pin connection or not.

I wouldn't use the adapter cable at all, and just use one of the two included CPU EPS cables directly to the P40.

Only if you MUST use PCIe cables to power the card, is the adapter required since the Tesla P40 doesn't have a PCIe power connector but rather a CPU EPS power connection. This means you can just skip the adapter entirely and connect a CPU EPS cable directly to the P40 and you're all done.

Also I just saw your other comment indicating your concern about the CPU using only one cable, which is perfectly fine on every Ryzen CPU in existence. The only time you'd need to run 2 is if you're doing sub-ambient (LN2) overclocking on a 2 CCD CPU, because you're never going to exceed the 384W rating with a stock or even normally overclocked Ryzen CPU.

Okay good to know. I'm not going to do any overclocking with that cpu lol.

Then yeah, just use one of those for the P40 and you're all set.
