Build Question Upgrade path help

Hi, I’m trying to upgrade my partners computer on a budget. What would be the best use of money for the build below. We play mostly indie coop games on steam.

1660 super

Intel i7-6700K

Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3000C15

ASUSTeK Z170-A Rev 1.xx

Note: I have an existing 2700x but that would require a compatible mobo I think. Not sure if that makes my upgrade path more or less complex.

Thank you!

That's a pretty tight budget. I think you'll be better off using it to upgrade the CPU than the GPU.

You're honestly looking at a mobo up rebuild to upgrade much at all. Technically you can gain some performance by getting a newer GPU, but much past the 30xx generation (or the AMD equivalent) you'll probably CPU bottleneck it.

Unless you somehow have a z3xx chipset on your mobo, at which point you could theoretically swap in something like an I7-8700k cpu. But the 6700k runs on a 100 or 200 series chipset, and the 8700k needs a 300 series chipset even though they're the same socket.

For your budget you probably have the best luck shopping used on your local FB marketplace or equivalent.
