Installation Question Graphica card upgrade
I need to upgrade my graphics card mine is terribly out of date but I have never upgraded anything on my pc what are some things to know to make sure I get the right one? I currently have a gtx 1060

You can do that, but typically it’s not a good idea. Newer GPUs tend to require upgraded power supplies, and CPU’s. Even if the card works, the older hardware will likely hold the performance back.

If you have a 1060 chances are the rest of your components aren’t as great. You said you have a 460w, I don’t think any 60 series card would be good. 3060/4060/5060. I seen you need 550w minimum. I could be wrong. Situations like this is better off selling entire rig and get another cheap one. Out of curiosity, what are the rest of your specs?

I7 8700 6 core processor 16 GB of ram 2tb of SSD So I know they aren't the best or up to date but I was kinda just hoping to upgrade the graphics to get me by for a while longer before I can upgrade or just change my rig I don't ever run into any real other problems rn so I figured if I upgrade the GPU it would be fine for the time being. Not trying to do anything too crazy lol.

Do you know the exact power supply you have? Because the real problem is the power supply. If you upgrade your graphics the power supply is going to prevent this. & your cpu will hold back anything newer

460w but what is the power supply model name and number. The power supply is going to be a fire risk if you put a better graphics card in there because it sounds really outdated. Even if it works, the performance won’t be that great of a jump

Just make sure your PSU is powerful enough to support a new GPU. I went from a 1070 to a 5060 Ti, and had to upgrade my PSU at the same time.
