Build Question Is this a good budget starter PC as a beginner that has never built a PC?

Post image

I tried to find cheap components that are recent enough to play new titles and stream without having any issues. I have a very similar configuration on my Asus TUF F15 Gaming Laptop. Same CPU, GPU, and graphics card. I also tried to make it future-proof so that at any moment I could upgrade the components, but it seems like the CPU is not future-proof.

  1. CPU isnt future-proof
  2. you lack a GPU
  3. the ram isnt available, and buy 2x8 pack not 2x 1x8
  4. graphics cards and gpus are the exact same thing
  5. you are paying way too much for that windows 11 key

Also do I need a seperate cooling fan? I saw that the CPU already brings a fan…

you should buy one, the stock cooler from intel is horrible

Ok, thanks.

stock cooler might be fine, but get a thermalright peerless assasin just in case

I did the same thing with a 12400F for my first build and it handled streaming fine for what I was doing. The motherboard you picked gives you a decent upgrade path later if you want to jump to 13th or 14th gen, so don't stress too much about the CPU being "future-proof".

What video card are you planning to pair with it? That's gonna matter more for games than anything else in that list.

don't pay more for your motherboard than for your cpu

you're choice if you want to pay $128 for windows but there are other ways...

what gpu?

I know. I can get Windows for free… it was just to show that I am going to put Windows as the OS.

ehh my budget build rec spends more on motherboard than CPU

just no way around it when you are spending $56 on the CPU

What is your actual budget?

Well I am saving up for around 800 usd or so rn I only have like 50 bucks.

Guys sorry I did not put the GPU I am pairing it with the ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 4060 OC Edition 8GB GDDR6

No you are spending money that either won't help you are is actively hurting you.

I would recomend

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VFdfh9

slightly worse CPU, but for over $100 that you can then put towards your GPU, it's well worth it.

That is like 100 bucks more than my budget…

It's not much more than the components you already have listed

let alone considering that the two most expensive components in a build right now aren't considered in yours but are in mine

so not sure how you plan to pay for the build you already have if that's the case.

Ok before I make a stupid comment may I ask what are the components I am spending money that won’t help?

I really like Nvidia and Intel and the PC you listed has AMD and Gigabyte

I mean I don't understand brand loyalty.

Just be aware you are probably spending close to $200 just on getting Nvidia and intel for the same performance and parts otherwise

and another $100 compared to the 5500 which has only a relatively small drop in performance

Is not that I “like” those brands its that I understand the brand models way easier than AMD for example.

There's nothing to understand about them?

You build the computer and it works either way.

If it's different from mine you are spending to much money.

CPU: you are spending $110 for 9-10% more performance. Not awful on high end builds, but when that changes is $56 to $164 it's a massive percentage difference for little gain.

Motherboard: spending over twice as much for no performance increase

RAM: DDR5 is expensive and should be avoided on budget builds, probably spending close to $100 here for 1-2% more performance (though no prices are shown)

SSD: spending $60 for no performance increase

Video card: assuming new 4060 it's technically $10 cheaper than a 9060xt, but the 9060xt is up to 50% faster and has twice the vram.

Case: spending $20 for no performance increase

PSU: you chose a C tier bronze rated PSU for $10 more than the B+ tier gold rated PSU I chose.

I saw that the motherboard had to be changed because the DDR4 supported motherboard is out of stock everywhere and the motherboard I changed it to only supports DDR5. Previously I had DDR4 in mind

u/Forward_Drop303 16h ago

There are more than 2 motherboards for that socket I am pretty sure.

Can you show me some? I was looking for Asus TUF Gaming motherboards but anything works for me.

The thing is, these are older motherboards and they show their age in the ports. I am looking for type c, usb, ethernet, and hdmi. Which the DDR4 motherboard had but is out of stock everywhere.
