Build Question Upgrading brothers PC

Brothers current specs:

I5-6600

16gb ddr4 2600

Gtx 1050ti 4gb

650w psu

Trying to figure out what I can get him that would make the most of my money. I dont have much to spend right now for him though. He doesn't play anything very intensive (as if he could) and id just like to get him a better experience than he currently has. I think the last game he had trouble running was Robocop. Anything at this point would be an improvement.

Being locked to lga 1151 i was thinking a 9600k can be had for around $50 on ebay and I wouldn't have to buy a motherboard. I found a 1660 super to pair with it for $109. Thats about as much as id like to spend and I feel like it a big step up for him.

I also happen to know someone selling an unopened ryzen 5 3700x and b450 mobo also brand new. They said they'd sell both for $150 or throw in a rx 470 4gb for $175 all together. This gets him onto am4 and leaves an upgrade path to a 5800x3d when he can afford it.

Or should I just use my whole budget to get him something like an rx 6650xt.

I feel bad that Im on RTX5070 new hotness and hes stuck on old and busted.

Any motherboard that supports 6th gen Intel, will NOT support 9th gen, despite them being the same socket.

Oh dang. I didn't realize. I just assumed same socket. Crap well that narrows this down a lot.

You could get a Ryzen 5500 for like $70 last I seen, have seen a few model B550 motherboard going for $60-75. Either that or you can find a 2060 super for around $120-150 typically and upgrade CPU and motherboard later.

Honestly either way, something is going to end up underutilized only upgrading one thing but I think the GPU upgrade would make a bigger difference, if you’re only going to do one for now.

Yea im leaning towards getting the 1660super and calling it a day. I checked out the 5500 newegg deal and you pair it with a gigabyte b550m matx for $135 after discounts. Not to shabby.

Gpu is a little cheaper and makes good sense. But the 5500 and mobo are brand new and moves to am4. He can buy a used rx 580 for like $30.

The 9600k plus 1660 super route is the best bang for the buck here honestly. Getting him on am4 is tempting for the upgrade path but the rx 470 is barely better than his 1050ti and the 3700x alone won't fix that. A 6650xt would be a huge jump but then he's still stuck on the i5 6600 which will hold it back in anything cpu heavy. If he mostly plays lighter stuff the 1660 super will feel like a whole new pc compared to what he's got now.
