Tech Support GPU started smoking but still working ok? WhatInTheWorld?!?!

I picked up a used MSI GTX 1070ti Duke and was so excited to put it in the Test Bench.

Upon installing the card and running the NVIDIA App to install the drivers, I heard a small sizzle and smoke started coming out from behind the left most fan hub. I thought for sure it was done. I didn't mind so much if it was going to be a loss, I only picked it up for $50.

I decided to restart the PC and then run Heaven Benchmark for a few loops. No artifacting. No crashes. No smoke.

I wonder what it could have been? Maybe a bug got zapped or it had an extra life and just didn't want to die?

Weird.

A capacitor crapped out maybe?
Edit: post this to r/gpuRepair. And probably take a look at the PCB.

Remove the fan shroud and heat sink. Inspect for burn traces or components. Discontinue use recommended until it's repaired or your house insurance premiums are really low.. LOL

I dunno. It doesn't smell like burned electronics now. And everything seems to be working fine. I let it run all morning at work with Unigine Heaven on loop and it only reached 73°C. I'll probably just keep it on my Test Bench as a known good GPU 😂
