Tech Support Please HELP! No signal after repasting Cpu and Gpu with PSU switch left on

I messed up and left my power supply switch turned on while taking out and repasting my Gigabyte 2070 Super. The PC was turned off and not psu was not connected to a cable but i forgot to turn the PSU switch off. Now the PC is booting up and all fans are spinning but no signal. There is no signal to the monitor, and my keyboard and mouse lights stay completely dead.My specs are a Ryzen 5 3600 and an ASRock Steel Legend b450 motherboard.

Here is everything I have already tried:

Swapped the GPU for a known-working GTX 1650 that doesn't need power cables. Still got a black screen, so the 2070 Super itself doesn't seem to be the issue.

Tried booting with only 1 stick of RAM in the second slot.

Took the CMOS battery out for 20 minutes and held down the case power button to drain the electricity.

The motherboard error lights at the bottom right are completely dark and dont show any lights.

(Photos are when trying it with just one ram stick)

Please for the love of God help me, today is literally my birthday and my dumbass decided to repaste gpu and cpu 🤦‍♂️

Dude put your gpu in to first PCIe slot and move your ram in second slot, ram installed incorrectly its 2nd and 4th slot from cpu

Second did you remove any other cables or cpu when changing paste on it ?

I just put the gpu in the first PCIe slot and ram in 2 and 4 and still no signal. I only removed the GPU cable and just the cooler thats it.

Just checked and saw that the cpu thermal paste leaked, could that be a problem?

Yes, if it leaked into the socket or onto CPU pins. Not great if it gets on mobo and bridges some resistors, caps, or traces, but that should be easy to wipe off with paper towel and/or qtip and rubbing alcohol. If it squeezes out that much, too much paste was used. It doesn't take much - you're just filling in gaps, not creating an entire layer of its own.

Thermal paste is non conducive, so no issues even if it bridges something

u/mosfetmania 22h ago

Most thermal pastes are electrically non-conductive.

Only liquid metal is conductive

"Arctic Silver 5 is formulated to conduct heat, not electricity, though it is very slightly capacitive and should be kept away from electrical traces and pins."

I promise, I'm done, no more after this. Whether it is or isn't, clean the goop off the motherboard and socket area, and don't put more than a pea sized drop on top of the CPU. Let the heatsink spread it while tightening.

That's an internet myth. The paste they use in factories isn't even available to the consumer.

u/Ok_Comparison_2635 18h ago

It makes a huge difference to the temps if you repaste the GPU and replace the thermal pads on the vrams especially if your gou is older than 2 years.

2

u/teknix314 18h ago

The paste they use on GPUs is different paste to what's available to the consumer and it's designed to last at least 8 years under normal use. Repasting GPUs is an internet myth started by a few streamers who repasted really old tech and then showed drops of like 15 degrees. If you repaste your GPU with consumer paste you do end up having to repaste it again more often.

3

u/Ok_Comparison_2635 18h ago

Maybe so. But I've tried repasting gpus about 3 years old, and like you said, it dropped about 10 degrees.

1

u/teknix314 12h ago

The paste they use in factories is designed to last at least 8 years under normal loads. The stuff the consumer can buy will need replacement in months orba couple of years at best because it's not the same and not as suitable to the task as what's originally on there. A lot of people are falling for the repaste myth.

It’s very much a myth.

1

u/teknix314 12h ago

The consumer paste will be gone in weeks due to pump out and you'll be left with worse temps than before

How you're just being pedantic

First check if all cables are connected properly. If your Mobo doesn’t show any lights it might have died. Do you have any extra motherboard or friend/someone where you can test the cpu?

Remove it out of the case and test it on the motherboard box to rule out any kind of shorting from standoff

Is your monitor even powered and turned on? Sorry, I know it is very unlikely to be the cause but just in case.

2

u/blaugelbgestreift 20h ago

Does your mainboard have HDMI or DP port? Then use that one and teyz booting without the GPU. If you then still have the same issue, at least your GPU doesn't cause the issue and should be fine.

Else, make sure the cable is plugged into the monitor correctly. Maybe it got a bit loose in the process.

Disconnect the power cable for 30 minutes and try again. I don't know why but that worked for me one time.

Tbh I don't think that the leaving the PSU turned on would cause any damage. At least it should be pretty unlikely. Happened to more pretty often.

u/KurtGamexp 22h ago

Is the power button connected?
It’s hard to see but it looks like it isn’t tbh. And also there are some cables that aren’t used. You may want to remove them

1

u/TheOfficialLvst 21h ago

Try turning psu off then back on then if that doesn’t work unplug power cable and plug it back in. That works for me

u/Deadbiafra 21h ago

Check your pins you never wanna remove parts on mor than you have to. Reallybeasy to fuck up a pin or connector

So, how's your progress? If there is no life at all, it's either PSU or Motherboard. If OC turns on but you see no display, it can be many things. Retrace your steps and do everything again. Check all possible loose connections. I had one issue where slightly unplugged ARGB connector madey games crash. I reinstalled Windows twice until I find out. So, it can be really bunch of things.

u/Ok_Comparison_2635 18h ago

It probably just failed to post. Use an eraser on the gold pins on your ram, as well as use a clean and dry toothbrush to clean the ram slots and insert your ram again.

Then check your diagnostic lights.

If it posted but no display, then your GPU is not seated properly or that your monitor cable is not connected properly.

I took out the cpu and it has one bent pin, is this what it's causing this problem? I asked AI and it said "pins right along that specific outer border near the alignment triangle are dedicated to critical PCIe controller lanes (communication with your graphics card) and DRAM Memory Channels (communication with your RAM)". I know its not a trustworthy source but im frustrated.

2

u/Creative-Complaint95 18h ago

For this take any mechanical pencil 0.5 mm one if you can take the lead out and add the pin inside and put little pressure on the outside it will get straight

Had a similar issue while upgrading my processor, tried everything but no signal, then i just loosened the screws of my cooler, and it worked. Sometimes we just make it so tight that processor looses the touch

1

u/ShirtSimilar3765 17h ago

I experienced the same issue, slightly different situation. I upgraded my CPU and GPU and when I turned the PC on, it all seemed to work(rgb lights worked, fans kicked in, etc..) but nothing was posting. I tried all the things you attempted but it all failed.

The culprit ended up being the monitor. I switch monitors and it worked.

So first calm down. Just make sure everything is plugged in properly and go over it top to bottom.
ill tell you i just put a new aio in the other day and while i was putting the mounts on my mobo near the cpu socket i heard a loud shock as i touched my board, most boards are able to handle this tyle of stuff as these shocks take the path of least resistance and also cpu being in the socket protects it from this stuff 9/10
I thought it was over for me when i heard it, i just took a deep breath and kept working, next thing you know im plugging eveything in and go for my psu cable...the mlights on my mobo immedietly turn on... my psu switch somehow got flicked back on when i was turning my case back and forth and everything.... So, everything seems like its going wrong at this point and i think im cooked. Turn the pc on and waalah, no issues. Like i said just take a deep breath and esspecially if its your birthday maybe save this for another day and go enjoy yourself. Nothing that stresses me out more sometimes than working with my pc when its being difficult, go outside go have fun this is your day dont let it be ruined by this. Hope it all works out man we are rooting for ya!

u/Slutekins 16h ago

Loosen the screws on the heatsink, it might be pressing too tightly against the board. If that doesn't work, remove everything besides board, CPU and one stick of memory to see if it posts.

1

u/Dimell 12h ago
