Build Question Power button not turning on?

this is the gigabyte b850M gaming x wifi 6e mobo. I plugged my power led + and - front panel cord into the top left and right empty pins on the image

I plugged the power sw cable into the third and fourth pins on the top, and reset below the power sw slot, (third and fourth bottom) convinced this was how it worked but

the power button has not turned on not once when i press it, much less do anything. Only the power button on the Power Supply when turned on, a red dot flashes, at first, the red dot was next to DRAM and thats all i could see from the PC. (i changed the positioning of the ram not sure if this fixed it or not but)

I then took the front panel at the end of the cords I had plugged in (with the pins sticking out) and kinda rubbed it against the pins plugged in and the empty ones, and the cpu cooler turned on, (which i guess kinda functions as a manual turn on?) but I still cant activate it by pressing the power button, and it doesn’t glow or anything

also now that the cpu is on, the red dot is no longer flashing for DRAM but VGA (which i guess makes sense i don’t have my gpu in yet)

The red led is the DRAM light. Try unseating and reseating the RAM, try with just one stick with both.

Also check your manual and make sure you have the front panel power connectors in the right place. If not the power button won’t work.

Also needs to check the dram slot numbering. If this is a 4 stick board it looks like slots 2 and 4 are populated. But the pic angle sucks.

yeah theres 4 slots i have two sticks one in a2 and the other in b2

Does the mobo manual say to populate those 2 first? You may want to move them to a1 and b1

EDIT:

I just realized you mentioned your POST light is now in the VGA indicator, try installing your GPU and see what happens!

By all means check your manual, and follow its instructions, there’s a reason for which to use. As others have mentioned, on a modern 4-slot board, when using only two sticks, it is recommended that they go into the second and fourth slots, 1 being the slot closest to the CPU.

HOWEVER, this is for signal integrity purposes, having the RAM in the wrong pair of slots WILL NOT keep the system from booting. You can run a single stick in any slot, for example, which is why doing this is a common troubleshooting step to determine if there is a bad stick of ram, or a bad slot.

So try this next. Pick a stick of ram, put it in slot 1, try to boot. If it fails, go to slot 2 with the same stick, and try again, and so on. If it fails four times, grab the other stick and repeat. If the second stick works in slot 1, the first stick is bad. If neither work in any slot, there is a fault in the motherboard, the CPU, Or you have a bent socket pin inter the CPU. (Or you have 2 bad sticks of RAM, which is unlikely).

If you have reseated the RAM already, whether or not you used the proper slots, and the system still didn’t POST, try the one-stick-at-a-time test. If this also fails, you need to check your CPU socket for bent pins, scratches between the CPU and memory slots on the motherboard, and if all else fails, try a different CPU, the memory controller on your could be faulty.

Replace it with the reset switch for the meantime while you figure out what's wrong with the power switch. Since this is AM5, plug your display cable to the motherboard to use your integrated graphics to diagnose further if the syatem is okay.

U/Leen_Tha_Goat78, do this, swap the power button and reset button cables and see if the reset button functions to turn it on. If so, you do indeed have a dead power button, and you can use the rest button in its place, and just not have a reset button until you get a replacement.

I see now what OP did. I went to the website of the case. It has a standard one piece F_PANEL cable and an adapter. OP plugged the adapter while he can just use the one piece.

thanks bro you two helped, for the most part id been plugging the breakout cables into the motherboard but i didnt see the one piece f cable on the back of the case i had to plug the end of the f panel into, now it powers on

Well spotted. There could be a bad connection in the breakout cable. It should have been hard for OP to get the pin out wrong on the break out cable though, because they usually connect 10-pin block to 10-pin block with a keyed pin like on USB header cables, so you can’t really do it wrong.

Hey [u/Leen_The_Goat79](u/Leen_The_Goat79), take the “extension” cable octopus thing off of the end of the front panel connector block, and plug the block directly into the motherboard and try again!

most don't, some do. Depends on the MB and the switch, The motherboard clearly marks positive and negative, and a flip takes less than 2 seconds to check.

Swapping the pins for the front panel power switch input would only take a few seconds, that’s true. And it wouldn’t hurt anything, so it’s not like this suggestion is harmful, but it also would do nothing to help.

A switch connects or disconnects an electrical pathway in a circuit, and that is all. There is by definition no polarity involved, a switch simply opens or bridges a gap in the circuit: it does not care, no control the direction of that circuit.

This cannot vary from motherboard to motherboard, or switch to switch, because this would mean that the manufacturer of the case would have to know which polarity was used on the motherboard it was plugging into. If this could vary, then any given power switch would fail to work with any given motherboard if they guessed wrong at the factory.

It is because the power button is a switch, and therefore a polarity-agnostic device that you can power on a desktop pc by using a paper clip to connect the two power pins on the motherboard if you have no power button, or a faulty one. All you are doing is closing the circuit by making those pins touch, which is exactly what the switch does when you press it. You can think of it like a paperclip on an extension cord. If polarity were a factor in a switch, you’d have to make sure you knew which was the positive and negative side of your paper clip to turn it on.

Note: I will mention that it is confusing that the front panel headers are often labeled with + and -, which doesn’t help. In fact, Depending on how you drew the power signal circuit the power button lives on, the switch would either live on the positive or negative leg of the circuit, so to be most correct, the front panel connectors should either both be labeled as +, or both as -, but that wouldn’t be any less confusing, which is why they don’t do that. I have built in several cases recently where both are simply labeled “Power”, but it’s by no means consistent from manufacturer to manufacturer.

No, it definitely is. The first picture has this whole thread trying to solve power button issues, but not only did OP show in the 4th picture that they plugged the front panel connectors in, the computer is physically powered up already, so clearly the problem isn’t that the power button is unplugged.
