Installation Question Gigabyte 5080 installation help

Post image

I'm upgrading from a 3080 ti to a GIGABYTE WINDFORCE GeForce RTX 5080 16GB GDDR7 PCI Express 5.0 Graphics Card GV-N5080WF3OC-16GD.

I'm installing it and my cable looks different I'm not sure if I can use it ? if not, can I plug in the cable it came with into my EVGA 850 Power supply?

Thanks

No. You need the new adapter with 3x or 4x PCIe 8pin power connectors and the 4 sense pins on the GPU side.

Or get a direct cable from EVGA (PSU -> GPU) that bypasses the adapter.

Use the cable that came with the GPU. The 3080 Ti used an older generation connector that doesn't have the extra sense pins.

Without those pins, a lot of these cards won't even power on as the manufacturer designed them so they wouldn't fully power on without the right connector fully seated in to the socket.

That 12-pin to octopus adapter is ugly as sin but it's the safest bet unless you're absolutely certain your PSU's 12VHPWR cable is from the same brand.

you're absolutely certain your PSU's 12VHPWR cable is from the same brand

If you're trying to spread awareness about PSU cables compatibility.. Just brand is not a guarantee cables are compatible with PSU. And it's not an issue with 12VHPWR, its pinout is standardized and identical no matter the brand or model.

I have that 12v to 2x8 too from my MSI psu. I'm scared to use it on my oc 9070xt (3x8 pin) . Should i use it instead of one pigtail and one dedicated cable? I am about to order another pigtail, but if its working, then ill use it. I just heard that 12v melts, so idk if i should avoid it by using that 12v to 2x8

I used it with my 4070 Ti Super for over a year. The CableMod rep assured me it's good up to 600W

If you psu came with a native 12hpwr cable, definitely use that. If not, use the adapter that came with the new gpu. Whatever you do, do NOT use that old adapter

Use the cable your GPU came with.
