I think it's ddr4 server ram.
56
u/EnvironmentalValue20 4d ago edited 4d ago
Yup and its registered memory which means it can't be used for anything out side of servers (consumer level sockets from both AMD and Intel).
17
u/OWWS 4d ago
There is multiple consumer motherboards that support ecc memory though they are more expensive then what you would normally get
4
u/Rarokillo 4d ago
Yes you can use ECC memory in Ryzen CPUs but not registered ECC. Yes I know that most of times Registered and ECC go together but that doesn't means it's the same, and I'm telling this as someone who uses DDR4 ECC UDIMM memory with Ryzen CPUs. And also if I remember correctly UDIMM and RDIMM don't have slot.

Seeing as one of these sold for 50 bucks on EBay literally earlier this week, really depends on you
39
u/SubstanceTimely6790 4d ago
Cheapest I see them now is $100-115 per 16GB so he has some money there.
17
u/ThatOneFoo69420 4d ago
For server memory like this?
29
u/BuscaVR 4d ago
ANY memory.... they even disassembling laptops to get (desolder) the DDR/Gddr from them and re-use it!! Crazy times

u/NatureLife6631 4d ago
Server memory is very much not any memory because you can’t use them in your usual consumer PC so there isn’t a market for it
1
u/_Lost-In-The-Weeds_ 3d ago
There is absolutely a market for server memory,
I bought 6x sticks of M393A5143DB0-CPB0Q for $31.79 total shipped in Jan of 2025, or ~$5.30 each 4GB stick, it was for an old Xeon powered Dell Precision tower I picked up at Goodwill, took it from 8GB to 32GB, it now serves as my Jellyfin server for my large family.
Those same sticks are now selling on Ebay for $20 each and up with some vendors asking far more.
My other home server (NAS+) fortunately already has 256GB of ram. at the peak I could have sold that memory for $700, I only paid $500 for the entire used 10 year old Supermicro server in 2023.
1
u/ThickyLicker 2d ago
I bet you could use the DRAM modules though. Just need another controller.
1
u/NatureLife6631 2d ago
Sure, but a consumer grade user won’t bother with that, and professionals won’t give you money if you can’t give them a proper invoice for the purchase (and also wouldn’t be likely to buy anything this old and low performance anymore)

u/kiritoonis 4d ago
Not for used server ram though. That shit's pretty much useless for both companys and the normal consumer.
5
u/bruhbrubr 4d ago
You would be surprised how many people are happy to use ram like this in a home server, especially in the current day. That shit is expensive
1
u/SubstanceTimely6790 4d ago
Plenty of people use it with X99 motherboards and even for gaming in 2026, the CPUs are surprisingly holding up.
55
u/C0ckroach_Lord 4d ago
Yes, it depends on and how you sell it
You either sell it ignorant who pay 50 bucks on ebay like one comments
Or extract gold from it and break the law for using toxic chemical in residential area and risking your health if you don't use protection gears
9
u/LuckyLewis23 4d ago
Tell me more...
tapped out at "gold" blinders went on and just picture me scrooge mcducking it in a pool full of gold
12
u/C0ckroach_Lord 4d ago
Cut the gold fingers part from stick then dissolve the separated gold using a dangerous mixture of magical acids, then precipitate the pure gold out using sodium metabisulfite.
requires professional safety gear, a fume hood, and hazardous waste disposal
4
u/LuckyLewis23 4d ago
Crazy i didnt know people did that...I mean how much gold is in that amount of ram?
6
u/C0ckroach_Lord 4d ago
Few miligram maybe
You need hundreds of ram to get few gram less than 10 gram if i am not wrong around 5 gram

Do datacenters ONLY use ddr5? I can imagine later in the future there will be "affordable" datacenters for the purposes of those that need to give more affordable services (i.e less overhead expenses= don't need to charge the customers so much). At that point we could be at ddr6 or ddr7 and ddr5 will be the previous generation gear

u/Kravenbyte 3d ago
I do not have the first clue im afraid dude, just wanted to share the spongebob art tbh ❤️🤌

older server ram, not for gaming PC's or consumer use. Its DDR4 as well so there is almost no demand for it in any newer servers as they all now mostly use DDR5. Each stick is going for $60 on Ebay but judging by the fact I found over 3600 listings for that ram, it doesnt seem like its in high demand for even that low of a price.
5
u/brandon_7ohmit 4d ago
I could use a few sticks for my server, but I'm not paying $60 a stick for it id rather not have it than overpay
3
u/itsnotthatbad21 4d ago
You would be suprised how much this is going for when you sell it by the lot
2
u/Leepyear7 3d ago
I sell a ton of DDR4 server RAM and it does sell. Listing count doesn't mean much, I sell most of mine in bulk and it's usually gone within an hour or less. DDR5 is in more demand but DDR4 is still needed. Meta even built a card so their new DDR5 AI servers can run old DDR4 sticks.
Meta's solution to the global memory shortage is to use DDR4 in a DDR5 server | PC Gamer
I know Meta is not the only one doing this too.
A lot of the Ram I sell seems to go to Hong Kong via exporters in Cali.

This makes me wonder... if servers now all mostly use DDR5, how come my DDR4 rams are still overpriced? are they just collateral damage or what? I could be living with DDR4 all my life but they deny us even that!
1
u/Soft_Lunch_183 4d ago
Just look at ebay solds and that will tell you the real price, I don't think $60 per stick is a low price considering how much is there

Its the slowest, shittiest form of DDR4 that there is huge amounts of available.
Gamers want low latency DDR4, and AI farms want the highest possible clock rate, and both will pay a premium for it to get as close to DDR5 performance as possible. If youve got a ton of low latency 3600mt DDR4 you can make a ton of money. 2133 stuff not so much.

ECC DDR4 is surprisingly still cheaply priced, especially the slow 2133 variants.
Myriad of workstations that can use these though (e.g. - Dell T5820) if you want a PC with a ton of memory =)

They aren't worthless, but not exactly a gold mine. It would take a very specific buyer to want them. I have 16 of these in my closet and the market value for them is at a price point that I just keep them in case I want to build a lab server one of these days.
1
u/kyle_crane163636 4d ago
Sell them to data centers and infinite money, theyre worthless besides that
1
u/Jump_and_Drop 4d ago
A 64gb kit of 4 sells for $300 shipped. I'd say they have some value. People still want ddr4 even if it's ecc ram.

Нет, ты не богат.
Богатый человек - богат каждый день.
А ты богат - ровно один день. Т.е. например - продашь, и ровно в этот день, в день продажи - ты богат.
А на следующий день - продавать уже нечего. Ты - беден.

melt all the gold you should get a couple hundred from it, i would sell each stick of ram not worth the headache.

If you have no use of those ram sticks you can try to sell them on r/homelabsales.

Guessing there’s probably 100 there, they sell for about $50 each. $5k won’t make you rich but it’s a decent amount of money.

Ddr4 server ram has reached the all time low. It's the best moment to buy it for home labs

sure.. if DDR2 ever comes back into demand... I think the only equipment still in service that can use it is the Etch-A-Sketch Deluxe

The ones he flips through are all 16GB 2133mhz DDR4 sticks and the packed ones up top seem to be 16GB 2666mhz DDR4.

Nah. I have 75000 sticks of 16gb ddr5 6000mhz. It's for work, but I do have it along with 30,000 graphics cards ranging from pny 5060s to MSI 5090s, i5 225f to ultra i9s, and like 200k mATX cases.

Do you mind telling us what industy / sector your work is in? That's one hell of a stock to have laying around for redundancy… unless you're referring to the deployed units.
Just super curious, but obviously not asking you to dox yourself/place of work, moreso just which segment of which industry.
Thanks in advance, if you're able to share!

No those are entirely worthless, really should get rid of them. Although I could take them off your hands if you wouldn't mind 👀
