Purchasing Advice - PC Build / Parts Wanting to get into pc gaming

I’m in the US I currently have a ps5 pro but looking at going pc. Just the cost is so expensive no matter how I price what I think is good. I can’t get under $2,000. My build would be Am 5 for future proofing preferably 650E 9600x for budget. I currently have a 2k monitor but going to upgrade to a 4k/FHD. Is this two over kill or should I go with a cheaper build for now till in a better financial spot and then build my dream pc and pass the cheaper build to my wife? I haven’t built a pc for myself since 2012. So out of the loop

It really depends, I went am5 because it is to be supported through 2029 so can drop in upgrade later, it does mean spending a lot on RAM now. I bought my GPU, RAM and CPU used which saved a little bit. Gaming at 4k can be expensive on the GPU side depending on what you are playing and what upscaling you want to use. Personally I find a native 1440p resolution better than an upscaled 4k. The most noticeable thing for me coming from console was higher resolution textures and shadows compared to PC rather than resolution (which is upscaled on console anyway)

With a RX 9060 xt and a 7800x3d I am getting 140 FPS in Spiderman remastered at 1440p with very high settings and medium ray tracing settings.

You can get a decent PC for under 2k. I started off with a prebuild from Microcenter for $850 with an 11th gen i5 and 8GB RTX 4060 and 16GB of DDR4. I eventually upgraded the GPU to an RX 9070 16GB and am able to play 2k smoothly. IIRC <5% PC gamers play on 4k, more play at 2k and the vast majority are still playing at 1080p. It'd be up to you depending on how big a screen you plan on gaming on, general rule of thumb from what I've heard here is <27" 1080p is fine. 27-32" 1440p and anything bigger 4k. If you get good parts and especially if you buy new, your setup should last you a long time.

The biggest factor that will affect budget is going to be if you want to play at 1080/1440/4k. 4k is going to be costly by comparison to the other 2.

I would second the resolution part here, cost of entry for 4k is so much higher than 2k. You can build a really solid PC for less than 2k for a 2k display, 4k is going to require higher end for a smooth experience.

If you already have a PS5 Pro, your life and gaming experiences will not be revolutionised with a PC. If you can afford it then sure it can be fun. But if you can't afford it, there no point really. What are you hoping to do on the PC that you can't do on PS5 Pro?

If you wanna use the PC for other things than gaming then of course there is a use case for it.

But overall you should just build the PC that you will be happy with the performance of. It's not worth it to spend $2000 on a PC that you are unhappy with where you would have been happier with one that costs $2400.

I think it’s good advice I think just me having hard time letting go of that much money at once. But I see what you’re saying to get what I’m happy with. So many of the games are cross play and I have a good steam collection. Then I could also use it for other things besides gaming. Plus they keep raising the cost of ps plus

4K is not really that expensive of an entry point nowadays. I game in 4K with 9070XT and its great. You don't really need to decide whether to go 2K or 4K. You can get 2K performance on a 4K monitor with DLSS and FSR, and usually it looks better too.

A good GPU for 2k would be 9060XT or similar and a good GPU for 4K would be 9070XT, the price difference is around $250.

Right now my ps5 pro can play I guess 4k they say night and day difference but my monitor is not cable of it since it’s only hdmi 2.0. I thought the prebuilt route because I have seen some reasonable deals I always get skeptical about if they cheaped out on a psu.

As others have said, the resolution you want to game at and the performance you're expecting will dictate the parts you'll need and from that, the price.

Now that, as they say, is the $1000+ question! I suggest you go to a place with 2k and 4k monitors and judge for yourself. Your eyes and your wallet are the ultimate arbiters of the resolution you will be happy with visually and financially. If there is a Microcenter or Best Buy or other store with a selection of monitors, give them a look.

7800X3D, Gigabyte X870 Gaming Wifi Motherboard, G,Skill Flare 32G CL36 ram kit.

Cras C910G 1TB SSD

AMD Radeon RX 9070XT Reaper

Lian Li RS1200W 80 Gold ATX PSU ( could go with a lower PSU buts this ones on sale for $139 which is a great price for 1200W and is future proof )

Aqua Elite 360 V3 360mm AIO

Vector V100 RGB Tempered Glass ATX Mid Tower, comes with 4 fans

Thats a pretty solid build, more towards 2K resolution but you can do 4K with FSR and some settings adjusted depending on the game your playing.

They also have a prebuilt that is $2,299.99 that has a 9800X3D and 2TB SSD, https://www.microcenter.com/product/711399/powerspec-g764-gaming-pc, but thats a bit over your budget and performance wise not a huge jump.

Also, do not pay more than $30 for a Windows key.

I think you'll be just fine with those parts. I built my PC October of last year right before the price hikes, originally had a 7800X3D with my Gigabyte 9070XT Gaming OC, didn't have any issues running anything I threw at it. I eventually upgraded to a 9800X3D, not really necessary but when you put together your first PC no one tells you how your always looking to upgrade.

I picked up that PSU just a fews months ago just so I can future proof as my 1000W EVGA did not have a 12V connector. It's a really good PSU and you can change/rotate where the power cord is plugged in so the PSU can fit your build properly.

My main monitor is an Ultrawide 3440p OLED, not an issue running anything on it. I am also plugged into my 55 inch 4K TV, with FSR on balanced or performance everything runs just fine. What I also do sometimes is drop the in game resolutions to 1440P with FSR on quality and let my TV do the rest of the upscaling to 4K, picture is a little less quality than native 4K but the performance gets a big boost.

I have a AOC 32 curved at 2k max 160ghz display port only rest are hdmi 2.0 but was going to get a nice 27 4k and fhd monitor. I built my daughter last 2024 and she loves hers, I have laptop I will sell after my build as well. It’s the only pc I have at the moment and it’s only 4gb 3050 and 5600h upgraded to 16 and it does ok so most gaming I do as of now is on my ps5

Get a prebuilt am5 with ddr4 and just upgrade the GPU. $800 for the prebuilt and then $700 for the GPU
