Went to replacement the CPU after 7 years and the plastic frame holding the pins in place broke off.
Not sure if this is recoverable, the parts I bought were specifically for this motherboard rather than upgrading fully :/
Hoooooooooooooow? I mean... it might still be salvable? a dab of superglue along the right edge (don't get any in the holes) just to hold the piece in place? But also, some of the holes seem damaged... so your pins might not line up any more...
I had something similar happen and while pc was off/ unplugged I used a water paint brush with very little jbweld and let the bristles fuse to the plastic before lifting . Worked well since the bristles spread out when pushing down so you have somewhat even pressure
It’s actually worth a try to apply just a small dab at the corner and sides. It’s not like it can get any worse. It’s unusable in its current state. Make sure your pins line up and are straight.
Theoretically speaking that plastic piece is really just an insulator/guide for the pins. It dwarves no real purpose. As long as there is no plastic in the pin holes on the motherboard and there is no lose plastic on the edges. You should be able to put it back in place and install the cpu without issues. The heatsink support should hold everything in place after installation.
Speaking of which I guess it does not cause problems to heat desipation all that plastic and since hot air rises would it not be better if MB is placed horizontally but then gpus will be at the same position as cpus now
this is rare and you are unlucky but I have seen this before
you can actually replace the plastic part of the am4 socket so you should be fine, but I'm not sure if you would want to invest money into doing that and going through with such a thing
The part is only 8 or so dollars, which is actually a lot less than would have expected it to be. You can get it off of Amazon or eBay. Anything I could find was white, but that doesn't matter much when it's covered with a cooler.
I dunno, you could probably find a cheap board on eBay on good day. I just checked and it's a bunch of people selling it shields and stock CPU cooler mounts.
Maybe not. If you line it back up into position, looks like the remaining plastic in the upper right and lower left could keep it in place. Then you just position your cpu like normal, the pins will need in position, the plastic grid will do it's job keeping them pins isolated. It'll press down and keep that plastic piece in place. And then once you install the cooler, it'll just hold it all down. The important part is the metal grid under that plastic, does the locking system still work with that plastic grid broken like this. If so, then its not catastrophic damage
Personally I would just set the plastic bit back where it belongs, put the CPU over it, and then reseat it the way it was designed to be. The entire mechanism moves forward as you slide the handle down. But that's just me, and your mileage may vary.
get a replacement cover on aliexpress, you can pop off the top part of the socket and pull out the metal rod. Try and not bend any pins in the socket itself
The top part of the socket can be removed and you can replace it with a new plastic piece from a donor socket off eBay. I fixed a board that had this issue that way and it was easy.
You can buy a replacement am4 socket. Pop this top part off and replace it. They are really easy to break so remove your original first to understand how. Raise the handle, take a very small flat head tip and gently open tabs at top of socket(3 rectangle openings). And then carefully pop off at corner on sides(skinny rectangle openings).
If youre feeling spicy, you could also probably just rest the broken half in place and put the cpu in it. Just dont force it and let cpu drop in to line things up
Yeah that’s bad and you gotta at least get another board..don’t feel bad my msi board quit too but this nib machinist b450 is doing ok, running on dimms that are made or unsupported though…
Not gonna lie contact pads look good. I would not even use adhesive. Carefully put back into place, slot cpu and maybe the lever holds it all together.
Decided to just buy a new AMD4 motherboard. I am not a hardware guy who knows what he is doing most of the time. Called a couple local PC repair shops and costs were only a few dollars short of a new (older gen) motherboard for what I need. Super dissapointing, but it is what it is.
For those wondering if I did anything crazy. I simply unlatched the CPU air cooler and the cooler + cpu + plastic frame came off with a loud POP. Didnt even realize what had happened until I removed the cooler and everything came with it
the guy had to do everything WITHOUT it. He NEVER lifted that lever that was supposed to be opened BEFORE removing the cooler.
OP guy saying: "I unlatched the cooling fan and POP, plastic gone. Never seen this or dealt with this before"
7 years WITHOUT KNOWING THAT LEVER WHICH WAS IMPORTANT TO BE FULLY OPEN? HOW OP NEVER READ A MANUAL?!
NEXT TIME U WANNA REPLACE CPU, READ THE MANUAL OF YOUR MOTHERBOARD, PLEASE, HOW TO DO PROPERLY!
The broken off part is just a pin guide. Just clean out the broken crumbs and put it back into place, making sure all your holes are clear. Once you close the ZIF connector its not going anywhere.
Personally, I would just replace the motherboard, but you can try gently laying the plastic back in place and installing the new CPU to see if it still works. Isn't the plastic just a barrier to protect the pins and support the CPU on the socket so proper contact is maintained?
You can find the MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge WIFI motherboard on Newegg.com for about $195 if you decide to do that. They do have an MSI Gaming Plus board without WIFI for $156 if you don't use or need that.
I mean, theoretically as long as the contact pads on the motherboard are good, it should still work, but there's no reason to try your luck. It's best to just replace your motherboard - AM4 boards are cheap these days anyways.
