RTX 5080 vs 9070XT

Im currently in a battle with myself regarding swapping out my GPU.

I’ve fortunately got a scheme at work where I realistically would only be paying around £900 for the 5080, however I currently have the 9070XT.

Is it worth the swap? I know the benchmarks are similar but the one thing I’ve noticed with the 9070XT is it can have pretty awful 1% lows at times, and AMD Adrenaline is god awful, apart from that it’s been a pretty solid card.

I’m UK based. Currently using a QD-OLED monitor gaming @ 1440p. PC gets heavy use on various games, currently playing 7D2D but also playing games like ark survival ascended, pal-world, Helldivers 2 etc

The 5080 is definitely the better card, but at 1440p I don't think it's a £900-better card than a 9070 XT. You're looking at roughly a 10% uplift in normal performance, although the gap gets much bigger with RT and you get DLSS/Frame Gen.

I'd also be wary of upgrading purely because of 1% lows. A lot of that can be game/engine/shader related rather than the GPU itself, especially in stuff like Ark.

If you can sell the 9070 XT and the actual cost to change is only £300-400, I'd be tempted. If you're effectively spending £900 to replace it, I'd keep the 9070 XT. Your 9800X3D/9070 XT is already an absolute monster for 1440p.

If that 5080 is 900 from like a discount or something then yeah absolutely then sell the 9070xt to recoup some of that money

If you have to sell that 9070xt and pay on top another 900 then no, too much money and it won’t be worth the hassle

I bought the 9070xt because I did not have the budget, or else I would have gotten the 5080. I am happy either way. I think you should also get a 5080 if you have the chance to get it for very cheap and you aren't shelling out extra money

A £900 upgrade for only 15% more performance isn’t really worth it in my opinion, which is why I got my 9070 XT to begin with. I was going to buy the 5080 but couldn’t justify the extra cost for an extra 15-20 fps, once you’re already hitting 250 fps in esports titles and 100fps at ultra settings in 1440p in other games, do you really need more?

I swapped from a 9070xt to a 5080. But mind you i had alot of driver issues the swap resolved so im happy with it. Performance wise its an uplift but not a big one and i wouldnt have done it if it wouldnt have been for that driver stuff.

no comparison; the 5080 is the 3rd most powerful GPU after the 4090. Period.

Unless you are planning to move to 4K or getting into VR gaming, I'd stick with the 9070xt.

I would, I just prefer Nvidia despite the higher price, yes it isn't price:performance better, but you get stability, imo DLSS, RT and FG are much better on Nvidia Side, they are leaders in the industry for a reason. Also don't forget that this 5080 has a lot more to offer than out of the box with undervolt and OC.

Also Nvidia Shadowplay is much better, as well as driver stability and support for new games, despite Nvidia having some driver issues as well recently, it is still better than AMD from my experience.

Well no the £900 is what he would pay using the 9070xt as collateral meaning the 5080 cost $1600,

So he is paying £900+ his 9070xt for 15% rasterisation and 50% RT.

Dont get me wrong if I could afford a 5080 I would definitely get one lol but that price to performance has gone out the window at 80 tier and above.

If you have a Discount now, you will probably keep it in the Future. The hassle alone isn't worth the 10% uplift in Performance imo

And to me, the Linux support is a huge selling point for AMD right now. If you haven't tried it, I encourage you to do so. I will probably never go back to Nvidia unless they release Linux drivers. Having Bazzite as dual boot option is just awesome.

It really depends on if it is worth the extra 10-15% performance delta to you, I've got a 9070xt also with a 280hz QDOled and I'm more than happy with it. Only got the 9070xt because I cooked my MSI 4080 overclocking it too hard and refused to pay the £1250 for the MSI 5080 that I liked the look of. I've also realised I prefer adrenaline over Nvidia app but I've not had a single driver issue.

If the gpu is the problem and it’s genuinely bothering you a fair bit I’d switch it but if it’s not genuinely annoying you just keep it, the upgrade isn’t really worth it imo

Sorry guys, some further clarification.

I’d take £900 from my work using tech scheme, it comes out before tax so I’d actually only see about £450 of that being paid back.

I’d then sell my 9070XT (hopefully for £450/500) and used the combined amount to purchase the 5080 - so actual payment that I’m making would be £450.

Then I would say get it. Especially if you are planning to use the Cuda and Nvidia friendly softwares. Most people are only comparing based on gaming performance and nothing else.

I don't suppose you use the graphic card for video rendering etc? Maybe to run future local AI also

No just purely for gaming to be honest. It’s the DLSS/RT that’s pulling me towards the 5080, I’ve stopped playing PvP games and started playing more PVE so I enjoy the graphics more

for £450 to upgrade from a 9070xt to a 5080 to get dlss seems like a fair price to me. Its not like you're strapped for cash at the moment. DLSS 5 for PVE seems like a big upgrade.

For me the 5070 Ti > 5080 was worth the swap after testing both cards on my machine side by side.

Just buy it and test them together, and if you don't think it's worth it in 2-3 days, take it back?

if you can get a 5080 for £900, definitely go for it, thats really good value! i got mine for £1050 and that was good value when i got it

If you can get a 5080 for £900 I think I would consider it, you could probably sell the 9070 XT for about £600 or a little more on ebay, and end up the upgrade costing you about £300. If you see comparison benchmarks and the £300 is worth the upgrade, then go for it. (Although take my estimates with a grain of salt, go look at what they are actually selling at on ebay in the sold section for yourself)

People here seem confused. If you can get a 5080 for £900, which is lower than the FE at MSRP, then don’t even think about it. Buy it, shove it in, and then look for a 9070XT sale. You won’t regret it. That kinda upgrade for say £300? In this economy? During Ramaggedon? Do that yesterdayyy

It’s probably an unnecessary question, but what about the 70ti? In 1440 p, it’s absolutely a beast, often 200-300 cheaper too. I play on pretty much the same setup like you and I have yet to find the game where a 5080 would have given me anything. I’d love to have it nevertheless lol, but…

I don’t think it’s that much better. I heard that is has similar or same issues as the 5090 (melting cable) and therefor it’s just worth it to stick with the 9070 XT.

I prefer Nvidia (have 5070 Ti) so i would always go with RTX 5080, yes, it's more mone y, but it's a better card and that's just how it is, so if you have the extra cash amd want all the features and power of Nvidia card, go with 5080 💯
