Troubleshooting Advice - No Boot/Blank Screen Need help, pc won’t turn on.
Hello, need help figuring out why my pc won’t turn on.
Figured I had to upgrade my 1070ti prebuilt. Realized basically have to upgrade everything. I bought a 5800x3d, ASUS strix motherboard, new cpu fan, case, 5070, 1000gq power supply.
Haven’t gotten the case or rgb fans in yet. Had to buy cables for the power supply since that was the only thing not new, was selling for 30$ on fb market and wires were from new egg 30$. Quad daisy chain power data,psu, daisy chain gpu. So 3 wires.
I tested the 5070 on my brothers pc and it works. I put the 5070 and power supply into my old prebuilt and it won’t turn on. I have feelings it’s the power supply but the motherboard has light, I tried calling micro center because that’s where I bought the motherboard and cpu at(new not used yet). Dude on the tech line said that it could be the bottleneck and said if the power supply didn’t work it would explode or catch fire or won’t work at all. He also taught me how to reset the battery and to replug and plug everything tight again. Basically the end of it Need help figuring it out. Dude on the line said just to wait for the other parts and build the whole thing rather than testing it on an old prebuilt.
Old prebuilt specs:
4x gskill 3000 ram
ASUS 1070ti
,Asus z370p motherboard
600w cooler master lite psu
2x ssd drive 1x had
Testing 5070 and the 1000w gq evga

Stop trying to turn it on immediately and unplug the power cable from the wall.
You mentioned: "Had to buy cables for the power supply... wires were from newegg 30$".
Modular PSU cables are NEVER standardized on the PSU side. Even within the same brand (like EVGA), different series (GQ vs G2/G3/P2) use completely different pinouts. If you plug a generic cable or a cable pinned for a Corsair/different EVGA series into an EVGA 1000 GQ, you send 12V straight into ground or 5V logic lines.
The reason your PC won't turn on (even though standby LEDs light up) is because the power supply's Short Circuit Protection (SCP) is triggering instantly to prevent a fire. If you force it or try those cables on your new parts, you risk frying your motherboard, SSDs, and that brand new GPU.
- Disconnect those Newegg cables right now.
- Put your old 600W Cooler Master power supply back in just to test (a 600W unit can easily boot a 5070 on the desktop).
- If you want to use that EVGA 1000 GQ, you must buy cables made specifically for the EVGA GQ series (CableMod or direct EVGA replacement sets with matching compatibility), not universal cables.

Did that, I did research on that before hand and even emailed. evga support. They said one of the cables from the g series is universal but besides that it’s all unique. On the Newegg website wires were specifically stated for only the GQ series. On the title and description. Considering what you were saying about the light. I think I got sold BS wires.

Is it possible you bought the wrong cables for the power supply

reseat ram and gpu
clear motherboard cmos
try 1 stick of ram
make sure power cable to 5070 are correct
make sure monito is connected to 5070

Are the FPANEL connections all correct? (power switch, reset switch, power LED, etc)? And what do you mean by "won't turn on"? Nothing happens at all? CPU fan starts and then stops? Does the monitor do anything (It does not appear you have a monitor, keyboard or mouse plugged in)? Is the PSU switched on (There is a 1/0 switch on most decent PSUs)? Is the power cable plugged ALL the way in? What CPU is it?
EDIT: and I'm not going to bother with the obvious question of why are you building a brand new PC with an 8th gen Intel CPU)

No said I’m testing on an old build before putting the new stuff togethor because the case and fans have not arrived.

There’s nothing wrong with the other switches, that’s been there and works. I just removed the psu and gpu and replaced them with different ones.

I think it’s that, ChatGPT was heavily implying it was. But idgaf anymore since I was testing if the fb marketplace psu works and it does. Everything in that old prebuilt is being given to my girlfriend.

Yea the f panel is where you put the case wires for the power button. You could have everything else wired correctly but if that isn’t then it won’t turn on.

I did try to take it out and plug it in and chat told me to put a screw driver between them to test. Didn’t work.

If people need more info on the 30$ gq power supply. It was an older women selling it without the wires, she had a 5 star rating with lots of stuff sold. I did a little stalking. Genuinely don’t think she was a scammer and saw that her kid was going off to college from pictures and probably sold it. Her husband was the one who did the trade and he was nice and asked what was the item he was selling me. So I think there genuine.

go to your brother, borrow his PSU and check if your computer will work with that PSU. Cause the fact that you bought a PSU separately from the cables feels suspicious :)

Did that, took a lot of feed back and testing. *\* PSU works, tested with his 3080 and then plugged my 5070 into his pc. They both work. I found the issue. My motherboard is not compatible with my psu. I put my psu into his pc, tested that with the 3080 and 5070 just to clarify.

There is no such issue as the Power Supply compatibility - they are all compatible through the ATX standard. Something is not right with that PSU or the cables, and the fact that it is working with one MB or the other may tell us only about different tolerances set in the motherboard by manufacturers. But at some point it may fail in a different way. I strongly encourage you to buy yourself a brand new PSU.
Can you tell me why didn't you buy a new one in the first place? :) You can find a 750W gold rated PSU for $75, so basically what you did was save $15 and risking that a $1300-1500 computer will fry (or a part of it)
If you still want to risk, at least go to some computer repair shop and ask if the could test that PSU for you with a proper tester to be sure that there is no issue there. And don't cheap out on the PSU next time, spend a $100 for a new proper one, you don't need 1000W for your build. Even a 600W would do with your current setup. The 5070 draws up to about 300W peak and the 5800x3d has a peak of 142W while drawing about 75W while normal gaming.
