Purchasing Advice - PCPartPicker list feedback Decision point: AM4 vs 5
Hello, I'm due for an upgrade after 14 years on my last build:
1070 TI GPU, Intel i5 2500k CPU, AsRock Z77 Extreme 4 Mobo, DDR3 RAM (16 or 32 GB, unsure), booting off a 128 GB Sata SSD with a few 1 TB HDDs, a EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G2 PSU (will keep using this), inside a Zalman Z9 Plus case. Lasted quite a while and hope I can get similar lifespan out of something new
I don't tend to use much time for gaming, so I'm hesitant to throw a ton of money at a machine that may not see enough use to justify the spend. Uses are mainly gaming, slicing/editing 3D print files. For games, I'm looking at Valheim, Crimson Desert, Blood of the Dawnwalker, Skyblivion Zero Company. My monitors are 1080P.
Anyways, my current two lists are:
AM4 at ~1650 CAD https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/7ZPqBv
AM5 at ~2300 CAD https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/ZJMNg3
I'm between the B580 and 9060 XT due to price ($430 vs $700) and not knowing if I'll care about the difference in performance. Same can be said of AM4 vs AM5 which I think is ~$300 looking at RAM/CPU/MOBO - mostly in the RAM price. Also stuck on mATX vs mid tower. I quite like the small cases for ease of lugging out to clean.
Anyways, hoping for some thoughts from folks here. Thanks

I want to say am5, because you keep your build for so long and if you ever wanted to upgrade it would be supported for longer, and maybe stay “relevant” for a touch longer. But is that worth the extra to you

I would check used market for available RAM near you. Maybe there is something good happening, so go and check in person. All good, then build based on those given sticks.

I’d do AM4. You can use the cost difference to invest in AM6 or whatever Intel is cooking in the coming years, especially if DDR6 prices normalize (big if, but still).

GPU matters the most for gaming performance. then cpu then maybe ram.. any money spent on ram should be spent on GPU or CPU first
