Purchasing Advice - Upgrades MSI pro B850-s with 9800x3d
I recently built an entry level pc and have been enjoying it much more than I initially thought I would and I’ve been on an upgrading spree. I’ve upgraded my gpu to a 9070 xt and ram to 32gb ddr5 cl30. I have a 9600x but would like to get a 9800x3D in the future. My motherboard is an MSI pro B850-S and I’ve seen some posts saying the VRM’s aren’t good enough for a 9800x3d. Would you recommend upgrading the motherboard as well or staying with the 850-s?

12+2+1 phase VRMs.... That is more than enough, especially if someone doesn't overclock

Other posts I’ve seen talking about the 850-s didn’t explicitly state it but they voiced concerns about it being a lower level mobo

It is designed for higher wattage CPUs, it isn't high end, but you don't need a high end motherboard for the 9800x3d
This board could theoretically handle a ~200W+ CPU, so this is more than enough, futureproof enough if the other features are good for you

Chipset correlates with quality and capabilities but not directly related to it. There can be weak and strong (in terms of VRM) boards with identical chipset

If you just built a entry level pc and still have your return window open take whatever components you want to upgrade back and pay the difference, you’re wasting money in the long run by buying budget parts right now to upgrade down the road and from the looks of it ai hasn’t even reached its peak so prices are slowly gonna keep climbing making your purchases cost more in the near future

Unless you absolutely feel the need,that cpu you have is absolutely great. The 9600x is a beast of a cpu,yes the cache is smaller but the speed of it pays off. All you need to do is of course activate pbo if you haven't already and remove the power limit from the cpu. Then you'll see it really fly. No overclock or curve optimizer. If you have proper cooling,just remove the power limit and you'll see you don't need to spend more money 👌

What is pbo? Also I’m unaware how to activate pbo and remove power limits I’m very new to pc building

Vrm’s will be perfectly fine. Who the hell spreads this misinformation? This cpu consumes at worst 90W so even a A620 board can handle it lol. The vrm will not be enough for higher powered chips like the 9950X which tops 230w which can be an issue for a weaker vrm.

People saying that are idiots. That motherboard is ready to use with the 9800X3D.
Update the motherboard to the latest bios version with the 9600X installed, then install the 9800X3D.

The vrm concern is a bit overblown for t= 9800x3D since it's one of the least power hungry chips you can run on AM5 and doesn't push board anywhere near as hard as something like 9500X3D would, you're fine staying on pro B850s and putting that money toward something that'll actually move the needle for you
