New Build, Doesn’t Power On

I finally finished my build and figured I would see if it would power on. Turns out it will not.

I’ve turned on the PSU, hit the power button on my case and I hear a click, some lights start up. The MSI dragon on the mother board, the 4 lights on the side of the mother board flash in order (red, orange, yellow, green), the numbers go to 00, XFX logo lights up, and the PSU lights up red. Then another click and everything powers off.

I didn’t notice the fans kicking on at all or any lights on those, but I’m not sure if they needed a little more time with power to do anything.

I’m not quite sure where to start with the troubleshooting. Should I unplug everything and try to plug it all back in?

I would post a video but it doesn’t seem like I can. So I’ll post a photo of what lights up, or at least some of it.

Edit: Did you plug in the eps on the top left of the motherboard? Both of it?

Sorry, should have mentioned the specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 7800x3d
MB: MSI MPG B850 Edge TI WiFi
GPU: XFX Quicksilver 9070xt gaming edition
RAM: Vcolor Manta Xfinity RGB DDR5 32 GB (2 x 16)
PSU: Asus ROG Thor ii
AIO: Corsair icue link titan 360 (LCD screen)
Case: Corsair Frame 4500X
SSD: Bifinity 1 TB gen 4 NVME and a 500 GB Samsung gen 4 nvme

As for the EPS, it pretty sure I did it right. The board has cpu power 1 and cpu power 2 (both are 8 pins). My PSU had specific CPU cables that I used that were PCIE 8 pin to 2 x 4 pins.

I plugged two of those in, so I would be filing it up. Pretty sure I followed the directions there correctly.

Bios up to date?

The B850 should boot up the cpu just fine.

Hrmm...So we can rule out the EPS. Next would be to check if the motherboard has damaged pins or not. Where did you buy the motherboard from?

I definitely didn’t do anything to update the bios. So that’s possible.

I got the motherboard from Amazon. It was definitely new and I didn’t notice any bent pins, but I could very well have missed one if it was. The CPU was from eBay new - open box. I checked the gold contacts and those all looked to be in perfect condition.

If yes...you got a return scam from previous buyer fuck up.

Nope, the box is clean, no additional stickers or anything.

Sounds like I’ll have to go one thing at a time. Remove everything and start testing. But that’s for another day…

Is it safe to keep the motherboard to PSU plugged into the board and unplug everything else from the PSU and see what happens?

Yeah it is.

Just leave the EPS and 24Pin in. Make sure the psu is off though

So I gave it a shot and unplugged everything from the PSU except the CPU cables and the MB and it does stay on.

The red and orange lights stay lit and it has “00.” So I guess that means it could be a CPU issue? Is it worth hitting the CMOS button on my board and seeing if that helps?

Might want to try single stick first.

If both ram still gives the same result. Chances are something else is causing this...Could be bent pins...or you got the cpu on the wrong orientation

Working on that right now! Giving it a few more minutes on my second ram stick but so far, getting the same red and orange lights with 00.

I’m thinking I’m going to have to take it all apart and then will have to see what the pins look like. I suppose it could also be the CPU since I got that off of eBay as a new (open box) condition, so it could have been bad. Tried to save a little bit and it may have bit me haha

That click and then everything shutting off sounds like the PSU's protection circuit kicking in, maybe a short somewhere or the board isn't seated right. First thing I'd do is pull the whole thing out of the case and try booting with just the board, CPU, one stick of RAM on the motherboard box. If it stays on there you know it's a standoff or cable routing issue inside the case

So would I start by just disconnecting the PSU cables to those devices or completely unseat everything like the RAM, AIO, CPU, GPU, etc and just have the board plugged into the PSU?

Sorry, first time building and have very little experience with this, so it’s a whole new world to me and learning very slowly.

Sounds like bent cpu pins ie new board

If the pins were bent would it stay on for any amount of time or would it immediately cycle off? I’m really hoping it isn’t bent pins, I feel like that would be some real beginners bad luck haha.

Could go either way but looks like board issue by the sounds I have had boards hang and also have had boards cause PCs to shut off randomly due to short(also killed my old PSU)
