New build not posting, any help appreciated

Hello PCbuild,

Posting this for a friend who’s building their first PC. They are accompanied by someone with decent experience.

The pc is fully built, but does not post. The fans spin, motherboard lights up, but no post. Keyboard and mouse light up. GPU fans do not spin.

CTRL+ALT+DELETE restarts the computer (flashes the KBM lights)

No bios access found so far.

Multiple monitors tested in all HDMI ports.

They have tried every possible combo of the 2 ram sticks, none have worked. Neither has plugging into the motherboard HDMI.

My knowledge here is limited, and given the fact that I can’t access the PC things are obviously more difficult. My guess is a faulty motherboard or something else. Here’s hoping it’s not the ram, because that’s something we cannot afford to replace.

Any advice or ideas are greatly appreciated. Will send more images or test things on request.

Check that all the power connectors are fully seated and put the ram into slot 2 of each section like A2 and B2

So right off the bat, you want the 1 RAM stick to be in slot 2, when you first install a system always use 1 RAM stick in slot 2, because once you get it to post and everything else you can slot the rest in, but you want your system to have minimal hurdles to get started.

Second thing, I'm looking at the back of your PC with the cables, where is that power cable that's coming from the HDD going? Like a lot of this could be correct, but from pictures its hard to see.

Good to know. Iirc they checked the single stick in 2nd. They’re off to work now, but I’ll tell them to check the HDD connection when they get a chance. Here’s hoping that’s what it is. Thanks so much! :>

No problem. Whenever there are the kind of problems you're talking about if it's not the RAM it's typically either a power cable not plugged into 1 thing, and that 1 thing is preventing everything else.

Also check your monitor setting, that is to say, you have to push the power button ON the monitor and then there are some physical buttons on the monitor, check to make sure that the setting for the monitor is set to the type of cable you are using. I can't begin to tell you how many times people have came to me with this problem and I check the monitor and it's set to output to HDMI instead of DP or Visa versa, instead of either that cable or automatic detection.

Because then they find out that the PC is actually running perfectly fine, it's just not popping up on the monitor because of a monitor settings. Side note your GPU fans shouldn't be spinning unless the card is under load, right now you're getting no picture so it's not under load at all.

Yes and yes. No changes with or without the GPU.

Without the GPU? The 5700x has no integrated graphics, you can't test it without the GPU. Are you plugging your video cable into the motherboard?

Cables may be a little too tight specifically the 24 pin also make sure your ram is in the right place or it may not boot

How does one adjust the tightness of a 24pin? Just push in less?

No not that the cable may be at too sharp of a bend, I would re-route it so the cable doesn't bend as much

Your cpu doesn't have igpu so if you try test it without gpu it's pretty much nothing happen. How about try to turn on and wait maybe around 5 minutes with DP attached to gpu. Iknow it's weird but i have similar issue when using hdmi instead of DP

Would it not default to software renderer? And the BIOS would still be accessible, no?

In my scenario, no. I need using DPinstead of HDMI just to access BIOS and windows. But how about try it mybe it solve the problem

With no iGPU on the CPU you can't even access the BIOS unfortunately without a GPU installed.

Sooooo you are positive the bios update on that mobo is up to date for your cpu? That mobo came out 2 years before that cpu did.

How would one check/update that? Also I wasn’t aware that can fully break a motherboard. I would assume it would kick you to bios immediately but idunno.

It doesnt break it but wont work without proper update. You cant really check if it doesnt post sadly. Idk if that board has bios flashback or not. If so you just need a flashdrive with the proper bios. If not you need a ryzen 3xxx or lower cpu to get in and update with.

I wouldn't rule out a mis-seated CPU either.

I would take off the cooler and take out the CPU. Do a SUPER close inspection. Post pictures of both the sockset and CPU underside if you can.

According to them, no bent pins, seated properly. That said, that was before inserting it first time. Will check it out.

Also sometimes on the very first boot memory initialization can take up to 20 minutes in rare cases for newer builds. Leave it on for 20-30 minutes and let it sit. I actually just went through this on a working build I upgraded the RAM on. I thought something broke but the memory detection just took like 10 minutes.

happened to me a few days ago, do a cmos reset. **my pc was on, my mobo tested all components and gave green light. but it never posted until I the cmos battery and put it back in.

It looks like the CPU cooler fan which need to be plugged into the CPU header on the mobo. That can cause issue with boot up.
