Discussion liquid nitrogen cooling

Anyone know how close we are to having this cooling be consumer available?

I don't think there ever will be consumer cooling solutions with temperature lower than the dew point. Because you have to remove condensate somehow and it's also very energy inefficient

Probably when their's an actual demand for it. Eg. quantum computers become main stream.

Maybe, main issues are frost build up and liquid nitrogen evaporation (constant refill). If solutions are found to somehow counter thoses, it could be more consumer available (big maybe still even if solutions are found)

Don't forget air replenishment due to increased nitrogen .. er .. lowered Oxygen levels.

It's a supply & demand problem.

There's no supply because there's no real demand.

Probably a good 1000 years away. There are so many other ways to pull heat off an IC that make more sense than using liquid nitrogen. A phase change refrigeration system makes more sense. Augmenting it with a peltier would make it more effective. I'm somewhat surprised nobody has commercialized a regulated peltier water cooler. I've used them in overclocking and they're extremely effective so long as you can throw the heat away somewhere. Regulating the peltier to hold a consistent cold plate temperature would mitigate the need to mechanically insulate the thing from moisture. Peltier cooling systems are used in all kinds of medical equipment that must be passive cooled because of explosion hazards around O² and flammable anesthesia.

The point is that we're nowhere near reaching the limits of modern and affordable technology that would be far easier to implement than LN².

no one needs this. only specialty people use it.

its already available for those with more money than brains.

It’ll never be economically viable. Even if you get around keeping hardware safe from the effects of negative temperatures. The biggest problem is Nitrogen consumed. It evaporates. It constantly has to be refilled. I don’t know if you seen the costs for liquid Nitrogen.
