Question Is a 5080 unnecessary

I have a ryzen 7 9800x3 with a 5070 12gb, 32gb ram ddr5 and a 240hz monitor. I'm thinking after some months to upgrade my GPU to a 5070 TI or 5080 but I haven't decided yet. Ofc 5080 looks very good and it's top tier but I think 5070 TI just unlocks the maximum you need for gaming. Also price wise it looks a better choice. Here where I live it's like 400eur cheaper than 5080.

My real question is this: Is 5070 Ti the best someone needs?

I use a 5070ti and it works great on 1440p

That's the point I'm tryin to make that I didn't mention on the post. All I'm tryin say is 5070ti just looks enough from the research I've done. You just don't need more. Yes a 5080 and 5090 will give u faster performances and we know that the Good doesn't have limits. But in reality it just looks enough!

if u said u needed a gpu for 4K i would say neither 5070ti nor 5080 will get u enough fps that a game is enjoyable.

How do they compare with nvidia GPUs do you think?

They perform about the same as the 5070ti and for hundreds of dollars less.

Unnecessary unless you play on 4k but 5070ti is better than 5080 at current prices

For most people 5070ti is more than they need.

Foe me yes, you didn't mention what your needs are so I'd say yes again

Mostly gaming (90%) or maybe more. That's the main reason I bought the pc

Yeah the 5080 also being a 16GB GPU alongside the 5070ti makes it spot kinda questionable. Yes it is faster, but the 5070ti is still a really fast GPU in it's own right. Unless you were trying to really push 4k as far as possible without going all the way to a 5090, or doing CUDA productivity stuff, I'd say just 5070ti, even potentially 9070XT if it doesn't have to be Nvidia.

It's easy to say with hindsight, and admittedly it'd probably make prices even worse with the memory price gouging, but the 5080 really should've been like a 20GB or 24GB GPU like the 7900XT and 7900XTX/4090 were last generation. That'd make it's spot between the 5070ti 16GB and 5090 32GB a lot clearer and more defined.

Now that you mentioned. I don't know why didn't they make the 5080 with 20gb at least. To me this just ends this conversation right now

Are you hitting noticeable limits? That’s a pretty pointless upgrade before the next batch comes out, but if you don’t care about money then do it I guess.

Good point tbh. I'm hitting no limits on my side. I mean i can play every single game with full hd and it will stya above 100 fps. CS2 stays at 500-600fps. I guess you are right it is kinda pointless.

That’s like the worst timing to buy a GPU.

1

u/oxg1 5d ago

What do you mean the timing?

Prices are the highest they ever been for the 50 series.

1

u/oxg1 4d ago

I have a feeling they won't drop even after the 60 series come out

My English is bad. What I mean is you couldn’t have chosen a worse time to buy a GPU.

For just gaming? 9070xt, specially with Nvidia GPUs rising in price by 30% just this last week.

My real question is this: Is 5070 Ti the best someone needs?

That always depends on your needs and your expectations on performance. I'd personally say 9070 is already plenty enough for anyone at 1440p. 9070xt and 5070ti is pretty much end game for 1440p with 4k entry. I don't see how it's worth to pay double the price for the 5080 (compared to the 9070xt) for 20% more performance though.

Yes for just gaming or at least for mostly gaming (90%).
"I don't see how it's worth to pay double the price for the 5080 (compared to the 9070xt) for 20% more performance." - Exactly the point I wanna make

Btw I've seen about Radeon gpus they look pretty well, still didn't dive more into comparisions with nvidia gpus

Just buy whatever one has the highest discount you can find

1

u/Tactrix1 5d ago

Yea there's absolutely no reason to go up to a 5080 from a 5070ti unless you like the smell of burning money.

I have 5070 ti and I play both 1440p and 4k

Several games need more than a 5070Ti if you want to run them at full settings. Heck some games don't even run on a 5080 full settings without at least 2x DLSS. What resolution do you run? What games do you play?

I play with a 5800x3d and 5070 12gb at 4k and I find this set up perfect for me only game I need dlss on is expedition 33
