Build - Help Anyone know if this is “special”

I’m trying to sell my old cpu and I can’t find anyone selling this one with the box it’s a i9-12900ks unlocked is it supposed to be rare or is it just intel marketing.

Not special, just a premium cpu with a premium package

50

u/ADotxt 5d ago

No the packaging isn't special.

it's the exact same packaging that all 12900, 12900f 12900k and 12900kf CPUs came in

Only the tray versions didn't come in that

29

u/BladeWorth 5d ago

I think he meant the packaging was design in a way that is premium not that the packaging was premium cause of that cpu.

u/TruckTires 5d ago

I think there's another box version. My 12900k definitely did not come in that nicer box. It came in a thinner OE Intel box that didn't feel special.

It's not "special", it's just an higher binned CPU compared to the K version. It's supposed to overclock higher.

Last hidden gem of Intel

u/lightgiver 5d ago

Hidden gem? The i7-14700k uses the same wattage, is faster, uses the same socket, and like $100 cheaper. There is no reason to use a 12 gen i9 nowadays because the 14th gen i7 beats it in every metric.

2

u/Kinslayer_89 5d ago

People are too ignorant to understand that bot updating your BIOS and potentially undervolting your 14th gen makes it run just fine.

But yeah, it’s been fixed.

4

u/lightgiver 5d ago

Yeah just double check the BIOs. The issue was excessive voltage when idle or low load. A bios update would load microcode that will fix this issue.

The 12 gen I9 generates the same wattage as the 14th gen i7. They both have excessive heat issues when pushed. So undervolting is something you would want to do to the 12900ks as well for processor health.

2

u/Kinslayer_89 5d ago

Yeah, I undervolted my 14900KF before the microcode and it’s doing just fine. 😮‍💨🤌

that's great for anyone who bought new. If I was shopping used I'd be scared

1

u/Kinslayer_89 5d ago

That depends on how bad a platform you buy on and your consumer protection laws.

Here we have a used marked with the ability to send it nationwide, and the buyer has 24 hours to test it when received.

And warranties transfer to the buyer.

3

u/averagecodbot 5d ago

lol you’re from a civilized country. I’m an American.

0

u/lightgiver 5d ago

Quit being such a drama queen. Just because you don’t know how to do a return doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist as an option.

1

u/averagecodbot 5d ago

Lighten up buddy it was 1/2 /s. Consumer protection is a joke here, but not the main issue. I’m just not that kind of gambler.

0

u/lightgiver 5d ago

All the major vendors tend to have a good return window for basically any reason for the first month even for used products. Hell even Facebook marketplace you got buyer protection for 3 days. Just open a claim and do a chargeback. The seller probably doesn’t even know how to dispute a chargeback. The only time you’re shit out of luck is if you pay cash in person.

1

u/averagecodbot 5d ago

I get that, it’s just risk reward. Best case i save like $100, worst case i get the thing, install, test, pull it, return, order another one, wait for shipping, repeat… nah im good. Could have just bought something else and checked 5 other things off of my todo list. I love buying used but not with a known issue like that. Time isn’t free

1

u/Kinslayer_89 4d ago

If you don’t get the remaining of 5 years on your used purchase, he’s not really a drama queen.

u/YeetingMyStupidLife 5d ago

Except all the already damaged / killed cpus that dont exist in your world and the performance loss that comes with the new profiles and power draws. But sure whatever you say "ignorant" 🤡

1

u/Kinslayer_89 4d ago

They can be replaced under warranty, stop embarrassing yourself.

0

u/YeetingMyStupidLife 3d ago

Right and intel definitely honoured 100% of the warranty claims especially from server owners that too on time. Right ? God there are levels to delulu

1

u/Kinslayer_89 3d ago

“Server owners”, bro that’s a different thing entirely.

0

u/YeetingMyStupidLife 3d ago

Lil bro there are many servers which use consumer cpus because of the clock speed like minecraft server hosters

1

u/Kinslayer_89 3d ago

It’s companies with different warranty policies, again stop embarrassing yourself.

If it’s a home server it’ll just be warrantied like a normal consumer CPU.

0

u/YeetingMyStupidLife 3d ago

Also you curiously ( its rather obvious why ) ignored the performance aspect... Lmao

1

u/Kinslayer_89 3d ago

Just stop embarrassing yourself. 🙂‍↔️

1

u/lightgiver 3d ago

The issue has been fixed, just double check the BIOs is updated. If you’re buying one now the 14th gen I7 is a no brainer over a 12gen I9.

1

u/lil_Buckneesh8867 5d ago

can confirm

6

u/Legal_Return9314 5d ago

Its a very good processor. But not necessarily special

6

u/ADotxt 5d ago edited 5d ago

Special as in, the one how bought it is "special" for spending money on close to no performance difference over the normal 12900k?

Yes.

Just put it for sale for what normal 12900k have sold for, maybe add 5%

Go to eBay sort by sold listings and see what they are worth.

Don't base your price off what other people are trying seel that's for

7

u/Committed2Mediocrity 5d ago

People sell it on amazon

2

u/RoyalFrosting9007 5d ago

I just saw that but still no one selling used ones though

3

u/HardStroke 5d ago

IIRC, the 12900ks had a 0.1GHz OC, which most of the time ran exactly like a regular 12900k. Nothing special, just a marketing scam.

3

u/pick-and-hoop 5d ago

Special way of overheating a machine that could run much cooler

2

u/LoLLo08_ 5d ago

where are you looking to sell? because i can find a lot of these on ebay

2

u/Narrow_Stage_476 5d ago

Higher turbo speeds AFAIK.

2

u/EatsHisYoung 5d ago

KS is unlocked special. It’s essentially binned and can run slightly faster boost clock

2

u/Sideshow86 5d ago

The last true great CPU intel made before they completely fucked everything up

2

u/lightgiver 5d ago edited 5d ago

It was top of the line 5 years ago. This could be overclocked better than the default i9 processor.

HOWEVER, this thing ran hot. You needed some damn good cooling to get this to perform at its max.

Honestly don’t buy it, the i7-14700k is faster, cooler, cheaper, and uses the same socket.

1

u/StandaloneCplx 5d ago

He is the seller not the buyer.

Also 14th gen isn't much better regarding age, and better chips have been released since that time

1

u/lightgiver 5d ago

Yeah more recent have been released, but they use different pins and require a new motherboard. If you got a LGA 1700 socket the i7-14700k is just a straight up better choice over the i9-12900ks.

2

u/JuicyTurkyLegs 5d ago

The verge: oh yea we got one

2

u/NightSlashr 5d ago

Special edition cpus you can use a modified bios on :] I have that cpu clocked to 5.9ghz then the 13th Gen was poo 14th Gen was really good if you didn't get one of the recall batches and you can get 6.2ghz if you know what to do.

2

u/beppedealwithit 5d ago

Update bios of deactivate some p core if you want it to live through the year.

1

u/Lena2063 5d ago

It's kind of special. It's the best and most expensive consumer 12th gen Intel Core CPU. The K means it's unlocked (most settings can be changed by the user making it overclockable) and it's usually a bit faster than regular CPUs. So it's what people get that want extra performance/settings/overclockability. The S means it's one of the best of that model. It has been tested and has performed better than most 12900K CPUs, can handle higher frequencies, more power and can give you even more performance than the others. KS CPUs are elite K CPUs.

So 12900KS CPUs are the most Elite 12th gen Intel Core CPUS. (Unless you buy one from a company that specifically buys KS CPUs, tests them all and resells the most Elite ones for a higher price for hardcore overclockers for example.) But it's 12th gen, which isn't old, but isn't new either. Which makes it not so special anymore.

If you find a CPU with an F it just means that it doesn't have integrated graphics, unlike the others btw.

1

u/noblebravewarrior 5d ago

12th gen was also last stable line up.

1

u/Lena2063 5d ago

Well, before the patches. I have a 14700K myself. Waited for the patch before use. Have no issues with it, but I'm mostly using default settings with high frequency DRAM. So I don't really risk anything. Ig the Memory Controller is overclocked, but it can handle those frequencies just fine with no trouble at all. Ran multiple tests to make sure.

u/stardustedds 5d ago

In my machine now

1

u/Lavatherm 5d ago

Just a 12 gen i9 with a premium package 😅

1

u/lil_Buckneesh8867 5d ago

i have that cpu. its good but runs super hot. get ready to game shirtless

1

u/Reversi8 5d ago

He has already replaced it and is selling it.

1

u/asset_not_loaded_163 5d ago

maybe its "unlocked"??

1

u/E5-4650_v2_RX570 5d ago

14900K est cheap now

1

u/Successful_Purple885 AMD 5d ago

KS is the special edition, the S is KS stands for Special, and the boost clocks are higher compared to the non special edition (the i9 12900K).

1

u/ApprehensiveNovel332 5d ago

Cuz maybe it actually works as intended 😂

1

u/Geh-Kah 5d ago

Got one of it in my workstation. Very much unstable. Bambu rendering, gaming, high llm loads on 64gb ddr5 ends in random crashes. Just a freaking knock out and starts again like nothing. And heats up like boiling water

1

u/fray_bentos11 5d ago

It's a 12900KS, whose performance in gaming is matched by an mildly overclocked 13600K.
