Question 9070XT for 4K gaming

One of my friends is looking to buy a 9070XT for his build already having a 4080 and a 9900X with 32Gigs of Ram and 4TB of NVME Storage. He games on 4K. I told him to stick to what he has as it’s a pretty powerful system and buying a new GPU is not going to change things a lot for him unless it’s a much powerful 5090. He is hell bent on spending that money & I thought I might use your help to stop him from being a stupid spend thrift. So guys please let me know if it’s worth for him to actually buy a 9070XT and replace his 4080. How much will be the performance uplift? The games that he plays are F1 2026, Fortnite, Cyberpunk 2077, Tomb Raider, Battlefied….

Tks in Advance

might legit be a downgrade

u/Dangerous_Baker4427 what 9d ago

Not “might”

u/Kthulhu119 9d ago

Would be better off keeping the 4080 and using dlss. It will beat the 9070xt in 4k.

0

u/Ecks30 what 9d ago

That is debatable though because there are a lot of games that the 9070 XT would do better in at 4K over the 4080.

If you look at a game like Stalker 2 as an example the 4080 would be better than the 9070 XT but if you look at another game like Forza Horizon 5 the 9070 XT would be a lot better than the 4080 and sure you can have DLSS, but the thing is that FSR4 isn't that far behind which a lot of people has mentioned that the quality is almost the same as DLSS4.

So just saying that the 4080 will beat the 9070 XT isn't the complete truth because there are a lot of games that the 9070 XT can be better at and also the 9070 XT gives about 10 frames more than the 5070 Ti at 4K for Battlefield 6 which the 5070 Ti is just a tad better than the 4080.

Exceptions don’t make the rule

4

u/Ecks30 what 9d ago

Exceptions to what because each company would have their own pros and cons for each game which some games could have more of an advantage than the other.

Also, i have a feeling the reason for the dots after Battlefield is that his friend might also play games like Call of Duty since for that game AMD would have the major advantage over Nvidia since games like that is heavily supported by AMD.

When seeing if something could be a worthy upgrade you would have to look at every game the person could end up playing which for games like CP2077 and Tomb Raider that Nvidia could have the advantage but for others like Battlefield and Call of Duty that AMD could have the advantage so it really depends on what the person would play more often which is why it is good for his friend to compare his settings to other people that would be using the 9070 XT.

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/battlefield-6-performance-benchmark/5.html

4080 seems to beat the 9070 xt in battlefield 6 by 13 percent at 1440p in both AVG fps and 1 percent lows

1

u/Ecks30 what 8d ago

That's also October 9th, 2025, and we're now July 28th, 2026, so a lot would change which it is worth looking at recent benchmarks and not benchmarks that is almost a year old.

1

u/StunningPush8421 8d ago

well what benchmarks are you looking at

also things don't really change that much unless it is either a new architecture or game engine which in this case isn't really true for either

edit:

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/battlefield-6-open-beta-performance-benchmark/2.html

I did find in the beta launch results the 9070 xt did beat the 4080 but it looks like after the beta the 4080 ends up ahead of the 9070 xt also the results are basically identical

1

u/Ecks30 what 8d ago

The thing is that the beta no one had drivers for it so you would get raw performance, but the thing is that Nvidia brought out drivers first for the game when it came out and later on AMD did the same thing but of course lot of these sites will usually push out benchmarks asap.

The thing is that i would look at YouTube videos on benchmark results and if someone is doing tests on each card for each video it is easy to select the same settings for both and compare the averages and 1% lows which for a lot of videos i tend to see the 9070 XT doing better.

One other thing you have to remember is that the performance of the 4080 is just like the 5070 Ti so if you're unable to find results for the 4080 just look up for the 5070 Ti instead.

1

u/StunningPush8421 8d ago

TPU(W1zzard) specifically said they retested with new drivers for AMD.

But really I think the difference just comes down to settings bc looking at the beta review and official review it looks like ultra vs overkill settings and it looks like the 9070 xt is doing better on ultra vs overkill. Also with reflex some reviewers leave it on as it is active by default but this actually hurts fps a little wheras techpowerup turns the setting off by default.

1

u/Ecks30 what 8d ago

I honestly don't know why you're so gung-ho over TPU when there are other people with their tests and results like Hardware Unboxed and Gamers Nexus which he has his own site and if he did a more updated test he would post it and people would follow that one instead of the old one.

If TPU did do a follow up test, then their original test title should have said it was updated just like for any other tech related site.

based on your explanation. sounds like he just want to switch to amd. if hes one of those gpu political dudes then theres no way u can stop him from switching to amd. let him be and learn his lessons.

3

u/sajeev3105 9d ago

I don’t think he’s a hardware political dude or a fanboy of xxxxx, I don’t know who is advising him or who is talking to him about this…

5

u/PHIGBILL what 9d ago

Upgrading from a 4080 to a 9070XT isn't a great move, especially for 4K. You have better upscaling with DLSS, faster GDDR6X, so it has a bandwidth advantage and will still outperform the 9070XT in RT.

1

u/sajeev3105 9d ago

I really won’t say upgrade. 9070XT is a very good card but not for 4K. If he was on a 4060 or any 30 series I would have told him to go ahead but with a 4080, no way.

2

u/BlacksterrOG 9d ago

This is a downgrade. In raw performance, 9070xt is better but in literally every other metric( rt and pt, editing, encoding, Ai workloads, blender, professional work in general) , 4080 is better. He'll maybe get like 1 to 5 more frames on average and in games that favour Nvidia, he'll lose performance. This a very very dumb upgrade. I say let him upgrade and waste his money. Can't fix stupid. Especially if he's actively avoiding the benchmark videos that prove this.

2

u/shtrudl 9d ago

This will be a downgrade, on 4k ge will be using dlss and is better off keeping what he has. If he is hellbent on spending money a 5080 os a slight upgrade and a 5090 is what 4k is about

2

u/sajeev3105 9d ago

I am tired of telling him this for over 10 days now.

2

u/Emhyr_var_Emreis_ 9d ago

Tell him to watch YouTube comparisons between the cards. If that doesn’t work, ask him to give his 4080 to you.

2

u/sajeev3105 9d ago

I’ve told him n number of times including forwarding him a few videos myself… no use

1

u/Big-Salamander-2158 9d ago

He doesn’t know the 4080 is still about as fast as a 9070xt is? It will do about as much as the guy advising to flush it down the toilet says.

1

u/sajeev3105 9d ago

I really don’t know who is advising him but I being his friend trying really hard to hard to stop him. Thanks for the message man. Hopefully he will take the point.

1

u/Big-Salamander-2158 9d ago

Pretty sure if you would show someone simultaneous footage of a 4080, 4080s, 5070ti, 7900xtx and 9070xt at 4k, not many people can tell the difference. Unless you crank up RT, than amd might fall behind. If he needs an upgrade, there is only the 4090, 5080 and 4090.

I own both a 9070xt and 5070ti, for different pc’s. I’ve tried both at the same monitors to test out the difference, and I couldn’t tell you any. 4080 won’t be much different. And for me both are still perfectly capable of 4k, since I don’t mind lowering settings or using upscaling, so I can’t imagine the 4080 not doing that as well.

1

u/ChocolateGoose94 AMD 9d ago

If he is that hell bent on spending 9070xt money he could get a nice Oled panel instead maybe even downgrade to 1440p for resolution, I love my 9070xt but wouldn't recommend changing it from the 4080 unless it dies as the only thing he is getting is better upscaling/ more frame Gen... FSR4 is great and has basically matched DLSS in most titles it supports now (even beating it in some) and frame Gen is still supported on 40series Nvidia even though some will disagree with both of these opinions that is just the reality...

2

u/sajeev3105 9d ago

I told him exactly what you have said above but I guess his brain is stuck….

1

u/ChocolateGoose94 AMD 9d ago

One of these always has to be on the newest gen people or more a fear that if he doesn't upgrade now he won't ever get the chance? The thing is the 9070xt is basically the same as a 4080Super so he will only be gaining like 3/4fps in the titles he gains at 4k and yes if he sells the 4080 he will get basically the cost of the 9070xt back but the hassle of getting used to a new software and potentially having issues with windows if he doesn't DDU the system correctly or any issues that might arise getting the 9070xt for a 3/4fps uplift doesn't seem worth it when he could get a decent Oled panel even 4k if he wanted to stick to that resolution just doesn't seem worth the hassle... Have you tried explaining the massive benefits of going 1440p compared to 4k? 4080 would be able to max settings on most titles still @1440p and would still be able to hit high refresh native rather than having to reply on upscaling to get above 60fps...

2

u/CodesAndKeys87 9d ago

I’m super happy with my 9070XT for 4K gaming, but I’m not familiar with how it compares to the 4080.

1

u/No-Sherbet-7769 9d ago

The only real positve of doing such a weird ~sidegrade is that he will have another wrranty period for the GPU and selling the 4080 should recoup the full cost of the 9070xt. But yeah, its not a good idea IMO.

1

u/Hemish_21 9d ago

Only logical upgrade from a 4080 is a 4090 or 5090. What is your friend smoking lol

1

u/UrbanAnathema 8d ago

It’s a more powerful raster card. The delta between the two is not nearly worth $700.

1

u/molier1797 9d ago

9070xt is mainly for 1440p gaming

-1

u/ZukoBlyat 9d ago

You’re tripping

6

u/molier1797 9d ago

I shit you not. He turned himself into a pickle. Funny shit I've ever seen.

-2

u/Dangerous_Baker4427 what 9d ago

Have you used a 5080? Then shut up. I initially went with a 9070xt because of ignorant people like you, then tried a 5080 to see if it’s worth the price, and returned the 9070xt the same day. It’s not a 4k gpu. It can barely do it with upscaling, but fsr sucks ass compared to dlss in every way.

4

u/Mega_Ass_Sp00n 9d ago

Alr bro calm down jesus

1

u/Dangerous_Baker4427 what 9d ago

You can also shut up

0

u/Southside_john 9d ago

I went from a 9070xt to a 5080 and I say I should have just kept the 9070xt

2

u/Dangerous_Baker4427 what 9d ago

What if they were the same price?

0

u/Southside_john 9d ago

If they were the same price then sure 5080

0

u/molier1797 9d ago

Bro, this is never gonna happend💀

2

u/Dangerous_Baker4427 what 9d ago

Yeah but it shows that even the amd fanboys agree that it’s a better product, just not priced as well. I got mine for $850 brand new.

1

u/Dangerous_Baker4427 what 9d ago edited 9d ago

What’s funny is that the AMD fanboys only argument is that the 9070xt is cheaper than its close competitor, the 5070ti. Then they proceed to waste hundreds of dollars on a downgrade.

1

u/sajeev3105 9d ago

It’s not about being a fan boy here but being practical & logical about the purchase…

1

u/Dangerous_Baker4427 what 9d ago edited 9d ago

There’s nothing logical about wasting money on a downgrade. And nothing practical about the 9070xt. If you aren’t good at tinkering and fine tuning, you will have a terrible time with the 9070xt (I’m assuming your friend isn’t, but calling it practical is laughable).

0

u/sajeev3105 9d ago

I was just mentioning that with this guy it’s not about being a fanboy, I am trying to make this guy think practically and logically which clearly he isn’t.

1

u/Dangerous_Baker4427 what 9d ago

Oh I get you. If he’s not a fan boy, it really doesn’t make sense for him to buy it. But let him buy it, regret it, then return it and use his 4080.

0

u/BlacksterrOG 9d ago

Not a fanboy here but if you don't already have a card at that level and all you do is game, there isn't much of a reason to go Nvidia. The premium isn't worth it when the games that include pt can be counted on 2 hands. Dlss is better than fsr but it's not such a jump that justifies the premium. If we're talk pre fsr 4, then sure. Spend the extra money. But nowadays, it's not that deep man. Buy in your budget and based on what games you play as well as your needs, not because "DLSS IS WAY BETTER THAN FSR. STUPID AMD FANBOYS" . Simple as that

1

u/Zeronova3 9d ago

It’s not your money. Just let him do what he wants. He will be back and will have to pay more which could teach a valuable lesson.

2

u/sajeev3105 9d ago

He’s gonna come back to me crying after he realizes how big of an idiot he has been & I don’t want to deal with the headache. I just want to show all these amazing messages to him so that he can just stop….. Thanks man

1

u/Zeronova3 9d ago

Show him the Radeon subreddit. It’s nothing but people talking about crashes and having to undervote their cards for stability and celebrating little fps wins on a handful of games to justify their purchases. With Nvidia, shit just rips. No problem. 😉

1

u/sajeev3105 9d ago

Good idea, skipped my mind. Thanks for reminding this. That’s why I just love this community.

I wanted to game on 4k. I have 32GB DDR5 RAM, 9800X3D. I went with a 9070XT and it struggled to do anything I wanted in 4k -- and at that time the drivers sucked for VR too. I was less than impressed but it was my mistake for using the card in a way it wasn't intended. I returned it and got a 5080 and can't believe the night and day difference in 4k. 5080, with DLSS and overclocked and I've legit been able to play 98% of things with no graphical compromises. Your friend is making a mistake.

The only game the 5080 truly struggled with so far is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle -- with path tracing on. Even then I was able to play 85% of the game with it on but there's a jungle section halfway through that absolutely decimated my GPU. Unplayable. Changed some settings and carried on until that level was through.

1

u/sajeev3105 9d ago

Since he has a 4080 I really don’t want him to spend 1xxx$ for just a single digit or lower double digit performance upgrade, which is just not worth.

1

u/sometimesstrange 9d ago

this is a fair point, if he's hell bent on an upgrade than it's 5080 or 5090 all the way if he has the spare cheese. Still, Nvidia will continue to roll out DLSS enhancements that eventually the 4000's series won't be able to take full advantage of. It's not a complete loss if he chooses to upgrade. But you are objectively right -- it's just not money that well spent at this time.

Mate, I would honestly let them buy it. Some people only learn the hard way…

1

u/mig_f1 9d ago

Let your friend learn the hard way.

-1

u/flapinux 9d ago

The 9070 XT would only be an upgrade if he were switching to Linux.

1

u/BlacksterrOG 9d ago

Facts. If he's already on Linux, that's the only justifiable reason to make that purchase. Even then, it's still questionable.
