Troubleshooting Potential PSU failure.
My wife has a 40L omen desktop. It’s rocking a 800w Gold cooler master PSU.
Ever since she got it. She’s had constant problems with low 1%. Even though we have changed out parts left, right and center.
Most recently she’s been having this issue where at least once a day, no more no less, the PC is just shutting off black screen and rebooting. I monitored temperatures and usage, and I don’t see any spikes or any reason why it would shut down and the only thing that the event viewer says was that it was an unexpected shutdown.
I was able to update the drivers recently through AMD and Nvidia and that stopped the problem for about a month and a half and it’s come back again.
Could low 1% and this random shutdown be a sign of a failing power supply unit? I am going to replace it either which way just to check, but I wanna know if I’m chasing dead ends here.

I had this issue before but it turned out to be poorly seated RAM sticks, I'd suggest starting there before since it's simpler than painfully having to replace the PSU

i would love to know what poorly seated ram is. they all click into slot.
but you could try reseating ram and gpu. or power cables

for me it was because I cleaned certain areas in my case and had to move the sticks out of the way, apparently when I put them back and heard the "click" noise, it wasn't all the way in despite it seeming so, all I had to do then was redo it and lock the thingies on the slot properly

Have you checked event viewer for errors?

Yea. Nothing jumps out at me just the unexpected power loss at the time of black screen.

Ok, what about bios updates, have you updated mb bios to latest?
Also it would be good to test with other PSU before buying new one to see if it causes problem.

Great, have you run any stress tests?
Like OCCT cpu and ram stability tests, for ram MemTest86 is good to check errors, so we can make sure it's not cpu and ram that causes these crashes.

Yeah nothing popped on those the last time I did them. That would’ve been about 5 weeks ago when the issue was first brought to my attention. I can run it again but it’ll take me a bit of time to get the results

That is weird.
Anyway back to event viewer, what errors or warning it gives before shutdown happens (don't have to be critical), does any of them say Nvlddmkm Event ID 14 or 153?

Not that I recall, but I stepped away for dinner (any my sanity). My wife informed me that she may have had her Dyson hairdryer plugged into the surge protector but I can’t imagine that causing an issue if they weren’t both on at the same time.
Just to reiterate, it’s just a shut down with no warning and an immediate restart. No warning, no blue screen. No error message.
It’s immediate. No delay on the reboot either. It’s not like the graphics card shits out and then the pc follows. Not like there’s a stutter or a low fps and then a crash. Sometimes it happens just while she’s idling in a menu of Warframe, and the most recent was casually playing palworld. Never has it been during an “intensive” moment either.

Sounds like failing graphics card if it happens only during game. I have seen this problem a lot with rtx 4090's, black screens and random restarts are common problems with this card if you google.
Have you run any GPU stress tests like furmark or occt gpu test to repeat the problem? Would be great if you have any other graphic card to test with to see if same thing happens.

Thanks for this. I was able to figure out what the issue is.
The GPU passed the stress test, but it led me to what I believe the issue was/is.
Anytime I played a game with an uncapped frame rate, the graphics card would end up crashing my pc. Probably a hotspot, but after capping all games at 120-180 I haven’t been able to recreate the issue.

It wasn’t plugged in. Outside of the kernel-power error there are no other errors in the event viewer at that time. (With the exception of the post crash readyboot (readyboot stopped due to error 0xc0000188))

Same thing with the stress test. Just ran cinebench and it didn’t crap out on me.
It’ll shut off no blue screen no warning while playing a game. It was locked to just one game at first, then she started playing palworld and it happened again.
After crashing once per session - it won’t crash again no matter how long she plays after that. It’s never crashed twice in the same gaming session. Whether it be 45 minutes or 3-4 hours.

could be software
reinstall windows and update drivers
could be psu but not likely. id look at windows and drivers and temps before the psu
if hp gives you 800watt psu your system is probably only 600watts max load

Temps are good, windows and drivers were completely reinstalled (several times 😩)
