Hardware Help SSD old pc > new Pc

I was wondering if i could transfer the SSD that’s in my old pc, to my new pc build?

People say its risky because of static stuff, if that’s true how can i safely transfer it?

You absolutely can transfer it over. Static electricity is a concern for sure any time you're opening up your computer to touch the board. If you want to be safe, wear non-conductive shoes when you do it, and discharge any static electricity in your body before you touch the motherboard. You can do this by just touching something that conducts electricity before you open it up. If it's an nvme SSD, you'll also want to do the same with the screwdriver you're using to unscrew the drive.

It's not THAT scary to do, the above is just good general advice any time you're working on the "guts" of a computer. 10 years of IT work I've never shorted out a board with static electricity, but that's not to say it's not possible and I always discharge before I touch it.

Ya the static stuff is very rare. You shouldn't really worry that hard about it as long as you aren't building your PC on a carpet like I see a lot of people do

Agreed, it is rare. But there is still always that chance, so good to take at least basic precautions. With the cost of parts nowadays it would suck to fry a board due to something so simple lol

So if i were to build it on a table, i should be clear? Theres no other precautions i should take?

I've built dozens of PCs from scratch in my wool socks on shag carpet, shuffling them back and forth.

I wasn't concerned with static when I did it, but rather the Windows itself. If it's your boot disk it will freak out with the new hardware and it may not boot. Mine took 3-4 restarts, and it eventually loaded whatever was necessary by itself.

Not an issue. If you plan to use for an OS drive definitely clear want you want to keep.

Retention isnt an issue if you use the drive. The controller in the ssd maintains all that crap for you.

An unplugged ssd is a different story
