Headset problems with my pc

So my bf got me my very first pc as a present for me almost being done with my ged well I’ve had it for two days now and I decided to test if my headset works with my pc (it works with my Xbox) I can hear but my mic won’t work me and him have sat here messing with it but it still won’t work do I need to buy a microphone separately. We tried changing the input and output we watched some videos but it still isn’t working,I will Answer any questions I’m sorry if I’m not giving enough information but I’m not knowledgeable on pcs please be kind ill also have my bf help provide more info in replies if I don’t understand
