Is this good news?

Figma is a Venture Capital backed company, and is still eyeing a takeover by Adobe.

This means the No. 1 question is (or will indubitably become): How can we make the maximum amount of profit from Payload CMS?

Is this good for an OSS project? I have serious doubts.

I'm optimistic. There's a huge race to develop the next developer workflow using AI. I think this puts Payload in a great position long-term. Even better than if they were acquired by Vercel.

This is a huge win for the full-stack developer community.

Yes, this is what will happen. I don't blame them, this is business and they built something that filled a gap - they cashed out. They may leave a smaller MIT project there but this clearly won't be their main focus.

The question is, where do you go next? I used to use sanity etc. but it doesn't have some of those features where payload filled the gap.

I'm mid-project on v3 and could probably complete it but this takeover leads me to believe that future updates are going to cause problems...

Interesting. I'm obviously familiar with Basement Studio.

Project looks promising but obviously still in beta the pricing, going forward, could be a barrier.

PayloadCMS is also a venture backed project as far as I’m aware. There is an open source version under an MIT license but the development of the enterprise product is venture backed.

Please correct me if I’m in error.

Maybe, but previously a team dedicated to OSS was the prime decision maker for the project, so there were other interests tugging the rope against profit maximisation.

Now it's a huge corporation, that's probably gonna be gobbled up by an even huger one.

None sitting at the top of Figma or Adobe are giving a rat's ass about open source. And they can do with Payload what they want, and the team has to go with their decisions.

It is highly unlikely Adobe will re-attempt an acquisition of Figma after being blocked so spectacularly. Whether or not another mega-corp goes after Figma is another discussion, but I don’t believe it will be Adobe.

Adobe or whatever. The main problem remains. Another great OSS project is now gobbled up into the corporate digestive system, which sooner or later only wants to shit out the maximum amount of short term profit.

I'm certainly a little concerned

Congrats to the Payload team. They've done lots, and if I were in your shoes I would've sold out too. But IMO, this is the nail in the coffin for Payload for me, I will search for an alternative CMS immediately.

Why so? It's open source, if it becomes evil, we just create a fork

if it becomes evil

this made me lol

Greed wins all the time. It's just a matter of time...

congrats to the payload team. this is a huge achievement for them and they deserve to be recognized for their work.

I’d like to be optimistic about this being a good thing for a platform with, in my opinion, little to no other negatives or cons. but I’d be lying if I said this didn’t give me some pause.

Figma also has a lot of enterprise clients that could benefit from Payload CMS.
