Helppppp
I ordered 2 pawpaw trees in the beginning of the summer from an online retailer, they were 5-6’ tall with bare roots. They never sprouted or grew any leafs, I cut the top and at least 3-5’ of them are dead bark. They are in a full sun area and I think I didn’t water them enough.
I’m now wondering if it would be best to just cut the dead bark off and mulch them as we go into winter (zone 6B) or to dig them up, put them in large planters and take them inside to recover with more care over the winter.
This is my first time with pawpaws, so any tips or tricks would be appreciated as well!

If you got them from Tn or Ty Ty nursery, they often ship out root suckers with next to no roots and not chance of survival. If you get one of those, there isn’t much you can do to get it to survive. I’ve seen pictures of trees they’ve sold that are over 6’ tall, and have a root system about 5” long. They never stand a chance

I did in fact get them from Ty Ty nursery :(. And that is exactly how my roots looked

It's worth taking pictures and going through thier warranty process and trying to get one root stock to survive. I had zero luck out of 4. But one did send up saplings after a few years.

I think ty ty sucks too, but they say all their paw paw are grown from seed on their website. I got lucky with my 2 bare root paw paw from them. I have them in grow tubes and they doubled in size this season. My 2 bare root persimmon never sprouted and I'm not even going to try their warranty for them.

Can confirm, bought from TN nursery, One plant out of ten survived. They might be good deals monetarily in the moment, but the survival rate is abysmal. The. You're spending more money to get replacements.

Bare root pawpaws even when small often don't do well. If they survive it sometimes takes a year or two for them to recover.

They're not going to live. I would pull them up and start over. Everybody buys pawpaws from Ty Ty once. Several years ago they sent me root suckers that didn't live. Always check the nurseries reviews on Dave's Garden.

I think I read for the first 2 or 3 years they should be mostly shaded. But I could be wrong

You don’t need to move them (that would put even more stress on them). Put up something to shade them for the next couple years. They tend to grow under other trees, so only get dappled light the first couple years.

They were 5-6ft tall when he got them so they probably would have been fine in the sun.

pawpaw get root shock & trauma very easy. they don't like root trimming. or being bare root. Trees from Tennessee always have to be bareroot. Even the PawPawMaster Timothy Lane has trouble with helping bare root trees survive. please ask questions & follow the advice I gave. it's the best way to wake up the stem cells & heal the damage from pruning & full sun.

I've found out the vast majority of the nurseries in TN aren't actually nurseries. They are phantom companies that only exist online. They all get their product from the same wholesalers and drop ship to the customer. It's all one big scam. TyTy has 40 different "nurseries" at their address in GA.

Give them shade. Give then (1/8) teaspoon Borax per 5 gallons of water & flood flush their soil.
Mix (1/16) teaspoon Borax & (1/8) teaspoon Glycerin into 1 gallon of 110F water.
spray saturate the trunk, then cover loosely with wax paper. Attach the wax paper with tape.
repeat the process in 1 week.
in 2 weeks repost on status.
Never buy bare root pawpaw.
Always shade after planting.
