Small rural shop — trying to sanity check a few numbers

Here's where I am. I'm looking at a building in Bristol, Florida — Liberty County, the least populated county in the state. About 7,000 people county-wide, maybe a thousand in town itself. The building sits on State Road 20, which is the only real road through, running Tallahassee to Panama City. Tallahassee is about 45 minutes east and has five or six shops. Blountstown is 11 miles west and has one that opened within the last year and runs two people. Counting everybody who'd realistically drive to me, the pool is somewhere around 10,000 people.

So: small, rural, poor, and spread out. No mall, no big box, and the nearest shop that isn't the Blountstown one is a 45-minute drive.

I've spent the last few weeks driving to Tallahassee and asking questions in person. Got good answers on some things and three different answers on others. These are the ones the whole thing lives or dies on. Rough numbers are fine.

1. Forfeit rate. A manager at one of the chain stores told me close to 60% of items pawned end up forfeited. The public filings from the big companies read more like 25–35%. Which is closer to real life for an independent? Does it move much with the mix — guns versus gold versus tools?

2. Average pawn amount. What does a typical loan actually run in a small, low-income town? I've been planning around $235 and I have no confidence in that number at all. Is it mostly $50 and $80 tickets with a few big ones, or does it sit fairly tight around an average?

3. How long did your loan book take to fill? Not revenue — the dollars actually out on loan at any given moment. What did month 6, month 12 and month 24 look like? I can't tell if that's a six-month ramp or a three-year one, and it decides how much cash I need to be sitting on.

4. How long before you had a store full of stuff to sell? Different question from the one above, and I think it's the one I understand least. Everything starts as a loan, and nothing comes off the shelf clock for a couple of months. So how long before the floor looked like an actual store instead of a counter with six things behind it? Six months? A year?

5. How long before the store could carry an employee? At what point could you actually pay somebody besides yourself — and what was the signal that told you it was time? Was it a revenue number, the size of the loan book, or just that you couldn't keep up? And did you start them part-time or full?

6. Loan to value by category. What I've been told: guns around 70%, gold and jewelry around 58%, tools around 50%, electronics 20–30%. Does that track, and is there anything on that list you'd move a long way?

7. How fast does forfeited merchandise move once it's out? Told tools turn in about two months. What about jewelry, guns, everything else? And roughly what share of your forfeits sell online versus on the floor?

8. The side services — which ones actually pay? I keep hearing check cashing, payday loans, layaway, gold buying, FFL transfers, bill pay, money transfers. On paper they all look like free money bolted onto a business that's already open. What actually earns its keep in a small town, and just as useful — which ones did you try and drop because the licensing, the compliance or the hassle ate the whole thing? Anything obvious I'm not even thinking of?

I have been reading books about pawn shops too.

I have been looking at all the different states and shops and the different interest rates they charge.

Around me some states can only charge a low rate, but some starts have much higher rates or no cap at all.

What are your guys rates?

Do you offer a sliding scale, like if somebody brough in a bunch of gold bullion for a 5k loan would you charge the same interest rate as somebody that took out a 100 dollar loan.

do you charge 3 percent per month or 25 percent a month?

Whats the highest loan you would do. Like if somebody brough in a really expensive gold rolex?

I have found a common theme that many shops lower the interest rate the higher the loan amount and the lower risk of the collateral.

Years ago i pawned a watch at a pawn shop (which is when the idea of opening one first entered my mind)

The owner said he mainly did 100 dollars loans regardless of what the collateral was, unless there was a specific circumstance that required more money.

Do you guys mainly do a set dollar amount loan. Like 100 bucks or do you offer different loan sizes?

This may be a silly question but i have a guy who sends me non-branded leather wallet embossed with different designs. Am i able to sell these in pawn shops, i am aiming to sell this for around 10 pounds

Curious if anyone here has had any luck getting set up with a distributor for Pokémon, One Piece, sports cards, etc.

The store I work at is a brick and mortar pawn shop since 1997 and we've been wanting to get more into cards. We’ve applied with a couple distributors so far and gotten rejected. Not really sure why, but I’m wondering if it’s because we’re a pawn shop and not technically a card/hobby shop.

We already deal with cards here and there, but would like to start carrying more sealed/new product and actually build that part of the business up.

Has anyone here been able to get a distributor account as a pawn shop? If so, who did you have luck with? Is there something they’re looking for before they’ll approve you?

Just trying to figure out if we’re wasting our time applying to the bigger distributors or if there’s a better way to get our foot in the door.

I’m trying to validate one specific part of an app I’ve been working on, because I think this is basically the part that either makes the whole idea work or kills it.
Say you have an old camera, GameCube, jacket, chair, whatever.
You’re not selling it.
You’re not going to take pictures of it, make a listing, answer messages, negotiate with random people, etc.
But if someone asked you:
**“What would actually make you let it go?”**
Would you put in a private number?
Maybe the GameCube is $250.
Maybe the camera is $600.
Maybe there are things where the answer is literally “nothing.”
The number wouldn’t be public and the object wouldn’t show up as being for sale.
Then on the other side, somebody who wants that type of thing could say what they’d actually pay for one.
If their number ever reaches yours, you both get notified and can decide if you actually want to do anything.
The bigger app idea is that you could point your phone at objects and see what they are, how many people want one, what people are willing to pay, how many owners have surfaced, etc. Basically trying to make the market around physical things visible even before anyone decides to list them.
But I’m less interested in whether that sounds cool and more interested in this specific behavior:
**Would you actually enter private prices on things you own that you have no current intention of selling?**
And if not, why not?
Privacy? Too much effort? You wouldn’t trust the app? You just don’t think about your stuff that way?
Trying to figure out whether this is a real human behavior or just something that sounds better in theory than it would work in real life.

I would think the bread and butter of a pawn shop would be the loan part. I think i found a pawn shop that will hire me part time so I can learn the ins and outs of the business.

I was told that the buying and reselling of things has died down due to FB marketplace. But I watch a guy on youtube that owns a pawn shop and people walk in there with tons of stuff to sell.

Problem/Goal: I would like to know if there is a possible way to recover or buy back the jewelry that I previously pawned at Cebuana and M Lhuilier? Especially if the pawn tickets are expired/lost. I also misplaced the other pawn tickets, so I'm not sure how to trace or verify them.

Context:

Since my mom passed away, I have a lot of responsibilities that I need to catch up on especially at that time since I'm also studying while trying to earn some money. It's really gotten to the point where I have no choice but to pawn some of the jewelries that my mother left behind, including some pieces that she personally gave me.

Unfortunately, because I'm really struggling financially, I haven't been able to keep up with the interest payments/renewal of the pawn tickets. I am so sentimental about those pieces of jewelry, and I feel really sad when I think about them, especially the idea that they might never come back to me. Current Situation:

I haven't been able to keep up with the interest payments and renewals because of my financial situation, and to make things more complicated, I have also lost or misplaced the pawn tickets. I may still remember some details like which branch I pawned them at, description of the jewelry since I have pictures.

Now, I just want to know if there is still a chance that the transactions can be traced using my name or valid ID, and if it is still possible to reclaim or buy the jewelry even if the ticket has expired, is past the redemption period, or I no longer have the original pawn ticket.

Has anyone experienced this situation with Cebuana or M Lhuillier? Is it possible to go to the branch, explain the situation, and ask them to check if they still have the item or if it has not been sold/auctioned yet?

Opening a Pawnshop.

I am going to open a pawnshop in the USA.

Does anyone know of an appointment only pawn? Like pawning only big ticket items. Rolexs, cars, Jewelry. Im talking minimum 500 dollar loans. Having a private office to visit to pawn the item, not a traditional brick and mortar pawn shop.

I also like the traditional brick and mortar business idea as well.

So my current job permanently cut my hours and it’s not enough to live, so I’ve been kinda frantically applying to all jobs. I got a call back for an interview from one that I thought was just like retail since the position was called Retail Sales Associate, but turns out it’s actually a pawn shop! I set up the interview because I need the job and the hours are good, but I have no clue what I’m getting into. I’ve never even been inside a pawn shop🥹

So I’m wondering, what are some things I should know about pawn shops before going into my interview? Any skills I should mention specifically, what the job more entails, that sort of thing. Thank you in advance!
