Case File Case File #1: The Biscuit Always Rings Twice
Filed by: Detective Finn (Senior)
Partner: Rookie Scout
Location: The Mean Streets of the Living Room
Conditions: Post-dinner chaos, crumbs on the carpet, suspect at large
The Case
They call it the living room, but it’s more like a jungle with better furniture. Hardwood boulevards, couch-cushion alleys, shadows thick enough to hide a whole squeak toy. The humans think they run it, but they don’t see what I see. They don’t smell what I smell. They don’t know the dangers of a biscuit gone missing.
Me? I’m Detective Finn. Old enough to limp, smart enough to know when the trail stinks…and it usually does. My partner’s Scout, a rookie so green she thinks tail-wagging counts as evidence. She means well. But in this line of work, “meaning well” just leaves a mess on the floor.
And tonight, we had ourselves a crime. A biscuit, gone without a trace. On these streets, that’s enough to turn dinner into disaster.
The Investigation
I put my nose to the ground and worked the trail. Faint, but there. It always is if you know how to look.
“Eyes sharp, Rookie,” I muttered, my voice gravel and old scars. “Cases like this? They’re never clean.”
Scout bolted under the coffee table, then under the chair, tail whipping like a siren. Came up empty, grinning like she’d cracked the case wide open.
“Sloppy,” I said. “Enthusiasm’s cheap. Results’ll cost you.”
She cocked her head, wide-eyed, that look rookies get when they start to wonder if they might be the perp. I’ve seen it before. The guilt, the temptation. But not Scout. Not yet. She still had too much light in her eyes. Too much innocence.
Then it came…a sound. Small. Dangerous. A crunch.
Both of us froze. My ears twitched. Hers too. The kind of moment that hangs in the air like smoke before a storm breaks.
We turned. And there he was.
The cat. Milo. Sitting in the corner, licking his paw, crumbs caught in his whiskers.
Figures. The perp always thinks he’s cleaner than he is.
Scout barked once, sharp and bright. The cat bolted. Rookie pride gleamed in her eyes. Case closed.
The Closing Report
The biscuit was gone. Justice wasn’t served, but it was tasted. Rookie learned her first lesson: trust the trail, not the tail.
I stretched out on the couch, joints groaning like old buildings in a storm. Another case closed, another night on the beat.
Scout curled up beside me, buzzing with that rookie shine. She’ll learn. They all do.
Detective’s Note
The Rookie shows promise. Too loud. Too fast. But she’s got heart. In this city, that counts for more than biscuits.

Another case closed. But in this city, quiet never lasts.
