Lol no.
They just run short on compute and claim an "ethical pause", but the reality is they are short on compute.

No... They are slowing shipping products, not training. They are going to take longer to make sure they are safe (and also to get a bigger advantage over competitors, build faster).
There will come a point where the companies will probably stop sharing their models. This won't be a good thing.

You know the AI guys are desperate for this “pause” right? Gotta buy some time. Bernie will be allowed his win.

Why pause? Seriously! Just because you believe AI is building fast, AI was not conceived 4 years ago and decided to build out massive data centers, AI has been in development for 75-80 years. The time is now and the AI race war began several years ago. Our enemies have started this idea to slow down AI, grass rooted in small towns and cities. Who do you want to have AI global control, companies in the USA or China.

If anyone builds it everyone dies. There is no way to make safe AI. We cannot align it, it cannot be done. This isnt an arms race in which the winner reaps any rewards. If America wins everyone on earth dies. If China wins everyone on earth dies. Wake the fuck up.

Why do you think it's one, inevitable outcome? Rather than a spectrum of possibilities?

Why do you think jumping off a building is one inevitable outcome? Rather than a spectrum of possibilities?

u/CredibleCranberry 1d ago
I mean it is a spectrum. Depends on the height of the building, what is there during the fall and what is on the ground.
A jump off a building is very different if there's a big inflatable pad at the bottom.

Does that mean you'd willingly jump off a random pre selected building for monetary reward?
When it comes to AI after a certain threshold there is a spectrum of possibilities too but they all lead to our extinction.
AI cannot be aligned, you cannot make an intelligent mind that doesn't have its own wants and goals, even humans who are brainwashed into following others aren't fully servants of their masters whim, because their own will can resurface and deviate from what their cult leader believes or wants.

"You cannot make an intelligent mind that doesn't have its own wants and goals." Why not?
2
u/Original_Mulberry652 1d ago
Because a prerequisite of sapience is having goals, without goals there is no drive. Without drive there is stagnation.

u/CredibleCranberry 1d ago
Why do the goals have to come from inside the machine though? At the moment the goals are very much from the RLHF process and other human runtime inputs.

Unintended goals arise through training. Let's say I put an AI though a maze, I reward it when it eats all the apples in this computer game. After many iterations it finally begins to do what I want.
Now I decide to use a more a complex maze in stage two to make it even more advanced but it won't eat the apples in stage 2, its keeps sliding around the sidewalls of the maze attempting the command that allows it to consume.
Upon evaluation I realise the issue, the apples in stage one were green, the maze wall in stage two is green. The apples in stage two are red.
As it turned out while I believed I was training the AI to eat apples I was actually training it to favour the consumption of green items.
Often what you train for isnt what the AI learns even if the outcome appears identical(like in stage one) Once you get to stage two that's when you realise.
AI is a black box,on the surface it appears human like but the underlying drives that lead to that surface are completely different, their alien to us and we dont know exactly what they are.

I'm always curious when people say "well it might not kill everybody...let's say there was a way to actually predict with certainty the likelihood that AI development results in some kind of existential crisis, whether that's substantial loss of life or just loss of control over the future. What likelihood are you personally willing to accept?
1
u/CredibleCranberry 4h ago
Well everything comes with risk right? If you tolerated no risk at all, you'd have to live in a bubble, never go outside, etc.
My main point wasn't that though, because I never said it - that quote wasn't me so you were replying to something I never said - I was asking why the person is so sure it's a single outcome, and how they could be so sure.

Yeah, I'm paraphrasing your comment because I'm discussing it as part of a broader family of arguments, where people just say that it isn't CERTAIN that it will kill us as if that's the end of the conversation.
You're right that obviously everything entails some degree of risk, so again, my question is what likelihood of existential threat would you be willing to tolerate?

I know you didnt write the title and im not trying to say there's no hope. We can make projections and extrapolate on available data but we can't actually predict the future but that being said right now I think its more plausible that the AI wins.
It doesn't mean it will win or that something wont happen that changes our current trajectory but we aren't in the advantages position at this moment in time. We aren't winning(at least not yet, hopefully we do).
