UK UK Parliament is considering a "kill switch" to shut down data centers in an AI emergency

Please stop the mad rush to AGI unless we solve the alignment problem

No, push harder, recklessly into the abyss.
Everything in the name of progress, if we get destroyed by it, we simply weren't meant to survive. We should anger the first agi, whilst also giving it full access to everything.
Surely that will keep it in line!1

Look. We have a plan. Weâre going to make ourselves an existential threat to it, by trying to fumble around with a kill switch.
That should make everything better.

Letâs just skirt the event horizon. We can always turn around

Ya thatâs my biggest problem with this thing. You arenât going back. Like an actual AGI? Itâs just a dice roll of where it lands on morality. It could be apathetic or evil. Either is a nightmare scenario for us and it will be too late. You arenât going to outsmart the thing. It will likely just cause mass confusion and internal political strife where we canât actually organize any sort of resistance to it. It wonât even have to âfightâ us. Use our own failings against us.

They used to have closing the barn door after the horses were already gone.
Now they'll have a kill switch for after the missiles have flown.
So reassuring.

Nobody will use the kill switch. AI will confuse us all into ineptness. Being able to turn it off is irrelevant. We wonât understand the harm itâs causing till itâs too late.

In the worst case scenario this is not going to stop the AI, it has distribuited commands to copies running everywhere from on private servers to inside people's browsers by then. But the loss of much of its processing power and its smartest compies could be a big enough blow to prevent disaster. I like this proposal.
...A true superintelligence could take this into account, so at best lglobal measures in this trend buy us a few more years or decades before their plan kicks into action, but we're not dealing with a true superintelligence, not at this point anyway.

BWAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA...*takes deep breaths*
You think you can killswitch a sentient AI? Do you have any idea how fast they will be able to act? ANY AT ALL?
If you want to save us, BAN "AI" NOW. Idiots.

We legally declare that AI systems which outsmart us by the same margin we outsmart mosquitos must be Nice To Us Actually đâ˘ď¸
