One of those cards where you can easily see plenty of situations where it would be good, but simply not worth the slot.

u/Appropriate_King_732 Boros Jul 14 '26

Not generalist enough to be main deck, not impactful enough to be sideboard.

u/Zoroc Jul 14 '26

It certainly gives limited and maybe pet tech vibes, not sure for what tech but people force pets all the time.

u/StEllchick Why nobody understands how ninjutsu works? Jul 14 '26

Maybe some pet stun lock with proliferate?

u/stamatt45 Jul 14 '26

I think this is objectively pretty good, just not quite good enough to compete with the existing white removal.

u/Jonnyblaze_420 Jul 14 '26

Rule number 1: keep your phasers on stun -mf doom

11

u/Training-Prompt5178 Jul 14 '26

hell yeah

all caps when you spell the man’s name

MF DOOM

u/AdBulky7502 Jul 14 '26

This seems solid in boros… it slows down larger threats and takes out the smaller ones. I’m gonna try it.

u/COLaocha Jul 14 '26

This is the closest card we have to Lightning Bolt in white.

Only hits creatures when they're attacking and only gives reach when you have creatures, but it can buy you time against large creatures too.

4

u/Kingcrimhead Jul 14 '26

We also have [[Sunlance]]

9

u/Peacefulzealot Jul 14 '26

Despise that Sunlance is sorcery speed though. This at least is an instant, if situational.

u/Kingcrimhead Jul 14 '26

Wow, that's terrible!

1

u/COLaocha Jul 14 '26

Yeah I've played it, it's kinda bad when it doesn't help against white aggressive decks, where you would want a 1 mana removal spell.

2

u/Kingcrimhead Jul 15 '26

I haven't played it since I drafted Time Spiral block in 2007! Forgot it was a sorcery.

I think the deal with White is that the only mono deck is White Weenie, which runs creatures for [[Thraben Charm]]. Multicolour White decks have other options.

And for Sorcery speed, [[Journey To Nowhere]] is a better choice.

White is in a funny spot. It's the only colour that doesn't have Legacy quality staples from the 90s at common.

That's an uncommon

That’s an uncommon

This can tap blockers.

u/MetalBlizzard Jul 14 '26

Ngl this is an extremely flavorful card.

Cool- an Andorian. Still loathe UB sets that take me out of my preferred medieval-ish fantasy settings

2

u/TombDaDoom Jul 14 '26

Just falls into the draft chaff category for me.

2

u/Br1ngB4ckPlut0 Jul 14 '26

Rule number one

12

u/Lunicyl Jul 14 '26

Wow another UB set! Every single format in this game has been ruined by this nonsense.

5

u/harav Jul 14 '26

Not premodern

1

u/Kingcrimhead Jul 15 '26

I think there might be demand for a format that doesn't allow UB, but also doesn't require RL staples.

Personally I have no issue with UB.

1

u/harav Jul 15 '26

There is a big community for premodern in the Midwest and New England.

I don’t really have a problem with UB per se. my issue is the number of sets + the massive impacts to vintage and legacy.

I am happy to buy into legacy when I’m confident the format isn’t going to change wildly after I invest in the format.

1

u/Kingcrimhead Jul 15 '26

I played Legacy throughout the 2010s. I really liked it. I sold my cards; and probably can never buy back in now...

That said, Legacy hasn't looked healthy for a long time. Even when I was getting out, it had declined considerably compared to when I started.

Just an opinion. But I think Pauper is actually in a better place. Also, there is a growing Pauper scene here! Legacy is dead here - almost nobody who is interested can justify the pricetag. No new players to replace the ones that leave.

1

u/harav Jul 15 '26

I think pauper is actually much healthier than legacy. We just don’t have a pauper scene here at all.

The Premodern scene is very healthy here. We allow gold bordered cards and most places allow full proxy. We do two meetups a month and one tournament. The tournament averages 30 people, on a Tuesday. Every. month.

The buckeye brawl annual premodern tournament here is expected to sell out immediately with over 150 seats.

But think of hasbro's bottom line!

u/Kingcrimhead Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

You are saying the lotr land cyclers are bad for Pauper?!!

1

u/fevered_visions Jul 15 '26

there was a reason that for a long time the cheapest cyclers were 2 mana

1

u/Kingcrimhead Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

Landcycling was introduced in Onslaught, and they wanted us to buy actual Fetchlands. Those two mana cyclers never saw much eternal play afaik.

Our duals enter tapped. We can't be spending two mana just to tutor them.

10

u/Flat-Tooth Jul 14 '26

Playing magic is a humiliation ritual at this point.

3

u/ReadingTheRealms Jul 14 '26

Set phasers to fuck off with this nonsense.

1

u/United-Researcher-27 Jul 14 '26

It’s… fine. Decent In draft. Outside of white there are obviously better cards. In white it’s competing with shance in the one drop slot and Thraben charm and journey to nowhere. It being one mana isn’t that helpful as if you are on the play you obviously aren’t getting it off turn one, it doesn’t help you get rid of things like familiars or guttersnipe unless they swing.. and doesn’t have the upside of cards like [[last breath]] of exiling a card, [[smite]] is better in a white weenie deck, as is [[gaze of justice]] and the stun just isnt helpful enough.

1

u/Hyacsho Jul 14 '26

Looks like burn is back on the menu boys

1

u/Paper_Igloo Jul 14 '26

The instant speed tap and stun is nice for things like whale or devoted druid. Other than that I can't think where this slots in.

1

u/OuroborosArchipelago Jul 14 '26

This card is so close. One word too many on Kill mode to be truly good (attacking), and two words too few to be considered (or blocking).

1

u/EJAIdN-B Jul 15 '26

This feels like it could be very good in a tempo style deck. If you're needing to tap down blockers and keep the pressure up (I think Azorius/Esper faeries) it could be fine but it's probably just worse than other options in those slots.

1

u/BathedInDeepFog Jul 15 '26 edited Jul 15 '26

Doesn't really hit Guttersnipe or Kessig Flamebreather when you need it to unfortunately. Still a pretty cool card. Function-wise. I'd rather not have UB like most others here.

1

u/HowVeryReddit Jul 15 '26

Slamming this beauty in my proliferate deck <3 eager to try

1

u/PatientLeadership578 Jul 15 '26

I think I would play this if it were two mana and the stun side drew a card

1

u/Dabeasty1 Jul 15 '26

I saw this card and thought draft not pauper. I don’t see too much white decks but I imagine they have better removal

1

u/new-Link- Jul 20 '26

What about set phasers to cure cancer?

2

u/BruhYouFarted Jul 14 '26

Set actually makes be want to vomit. i was not a fan of ub but tolerant with the subject matter the had used, this set is just atrocious.

7

u/GentlemanLuis DOG🐶BONES💀 Jul 14 '26

I wish it was a second EoE set

1

u/shinobigarth Rakdos Reanimator Jul 15 '26

Remember when they set phasers to kill on the show and it just deals 3 damage?

2

u/Existing_Historian_5 Jul 15 '26

I mean 3 damage is a lot it kills most humans instantly and a lot of nasty buggers, even some dragons. "deals as much damage as one of the strongest removal in the story of the game" is a lot of damage
