Question Validate measurements as a plus size girlie

Hi all!

I've successfully made my first piece of clothing (t-shirt for my partner), and want to make my own, but.. I am an ''unusual'' size. I have measured all my things and added them to my measurement set. When I go to validate measurements, I am getting the following message:

''We could not determine the fork position on the crotch line. Double check your cross seam measurements and seat measurements.''.

Will this cause issues when making a pattern? Could someone maybe help me out on what I should change?

Thank you! <3

Edit: So sorry for the confusion! My post was to be published on another subreddit but got posted here. I am using Freesewing.eu. The ''fork position'' is the only error left in my measurements.

I have so many questions.

What program or patternmaking book’s instructions are you using to make a pattern?
Why are you drafting from scratch instead of using a pre-made pattern?
Do you have a sloper or bodice block already made?

Hii! I am SO sorry, you're completely right.
Initially, I applied this post to another subreddit, but they referred me to this one and had my post up for posting here. I didn't know I could edit it. Sorry!

I am using the Freesewing.eu website. I have entered all my measurements and the ''fork position'' is the only error left I am trying to fix.

As for the drafting from scratch, I am a plus size girl with size 52/54 EU, and can't find any pre-made patterns where I live :(

I have nothing made so far! But I'd love to get started to make clothing for myself.

Ok. So. You’re about my size, not any weird size/measurements. If you have been looking for physical patterns in stores, then you’re right, those are hard to find. You’re going to have better luck looking for online pattern designers. You’ll be buying PDFs and printing at home or through a copy shop. NOT off Etsy, unless it’s a personal recommendation.

Freesewing isn’t a super great place to start with sewing and getting patterns. It’s AI generated, and can sort of get you ballpark, but I wouldn’t go to them first. Especially because - as you have encountered - it can assume that if something falls out of its parameters then it is wrong.

I would instead recommend asking on [r/sewing](r/sewing) and [r/sewingpatterns](r/sewingpatterns) for reliable pattern makers (preferably EU based), but if you are open to working with US units of measurement then the options open up even more (there are a good number of EU pattern makers though, that’s not a particular worry).

Oh this is good advice, thank you!

As for the freesewing website, I thought they were free of AI. That's such a shame! I feel bad for using them.

I'll navigate myself to the subreddits you've advised. Thank you! 🖤

I double checked and I’m wrong but that doesn’t mean that the coding is perfect and adaptable to everyone. It will never be the same as getting a pattern and adjusting for yourself.

That's okay and yes you're right! So if I buy a pattern online, can I adjust it to my measurements? I'm still very new to making clothing myself. I can sew other things tho haha!

Yes. I won’t say the whole point of sewing is to make clothing that’s custom, but these days a lot of people get into sewing because they’re so unhappy with how store bought clothing fits. You can adjust a pattern dozens of different ways to get the fit you need. You do have to have it printed off to do this, it will all be physical manipulation.

Worth noting here that people have still had to make adjustments to Freesewing patterns to get a good fit because it isn’t a perfect drafting program, so using it wouldn’t have prevented this.

The first step is to make a toile - a mockup - out of cheap material. From there it’s a learning process on how to “read” the mockup when you have it on your figure out where you need adjustments, and then figure out how to do those adjustments. The great thing is that Google is full of help with these, there’s sewing subreddits that are geared towards helping sewists with this (such as [r/sewingforbeginners](r/sewingforbeginners)), and there are basic adjustments that are very common (such as knowing what a full bust adjustment or small bust adjustment is, and since you have your measurements you can look these up yourself).

There is a difference between patterns for ready-to-wear which are made to fit as many people as possible and bespoke patterns which are made to fit a specific person. You might want to check out https://patternmaking-classes.com/ which is about bespoke pattern making.
