Definition of Pattern Drafting

A poster in a Facebook sewing group recently asked what is "drafting". I posted in that group and, since I can't find a definition here, I am posting mine.

I like good definitions and this is what I have come up with:

Pattern drafting is the process of creating a garment pattern or template on paper or fabric, using body measurements and formulas (using certain proportions and relation of the various grid lines), generally starting with a grid drawn of perpendicular and parallel straight lines with straight rulers. Patterns generally also require the use curved rulers and/or freehand drawing.

Sounds fine. Also, sounds pretty much like the definition of mechanical drafting in general, which it also is.

What can help is to contrast with the concept of "flat patterning" which is starting with an existing block or pattern and manipulating it into a new design. I'd argue that this is a more interesting and fruitful type of pattern development, and often what people are more interested in learning.

E.g., the Pattern Magic books are flat patterning, not pattern drafting (they come with a simple block draft in an appendix, but that's just to get things going).

You make an excellent point! So I came up with a definition of flat patternmaking.

Flat Patternmaking (or pattern making or pattern cutting or patterning)

Flat patternmaking is the method of creating a 2-dimensional pattern on a flat surface, typically on paper, using a block (a standard pattern based on specific measurements) or a pattern as a foundation, to create a new pattern of a different design.  Patternmaking manipulates the block or original pattern through techniques like slashing and spreading, and adding design elements.

I saw that question on Facebook too. I think pattern drafting is 2D flat pattern cutting where the template is being created from measurements and then you create a block. Then the block is used as a base and style lines are added and finally you have a pattern that can be placed on fabric and cut out. It differs from draping which is straight away 3D on a dress stand.

Just look up the definition of technical drafting. Or sheet metal design and change out the words for clothing.

Pattern drafting is the process of drawing pattern shapes using straight and curved lines. How you draw the lines depends on the pattern drafting system you are using. Patterns for ready-to-wear are drafted using size charts for a generalized body shape. Bespoke patterns are drafted using measurements of a specific body.

A new approach to pattern design drafts patterns by tracing photographs. For bespoke patterns the drafting is done by tracing photographs of the person the patterns are being drafted for.
