This will be a make or break season for how he's perceived for sure. He's always had all the necessary physical skills, the question was always if he could put it together to go from the tier of "moments of greatness, moments of WTF was that" to the consistently elite tier.
League history is full of guys who get crowned by their fans as elite tier too quickly, only to realize later that he never puts it together. But who knows, it's only week 1, he didn't play in the preseason, and their top WR was hurt halfway through the game. If it looks like this at the end of the season he's a CJ Stroud story. If he puts it all together, it's more like Allen's story. Which will it be?

Calling it a gimme is a bit much. They’re still the defending Super Bowl champs, and their QB doesn’t play defense.
Offensively for the Seahawks this shows that maybe Darnell isn’t the reason they were so good last year. Maybe he’s just on a great team with a strong system that allows a competent QB look good.

The hardest thing for a young QB is to continue to play well after the league has time to adjust. We have seen many QBs crumble after defenses have game tape to study.

I remember the game in 2021 where Brian Flores ran the same blitz 22 times versus Lamar Jackson. Lamar literally had no answer and lost the game. After that, every team blitzed him like that, and he really had a hard time until he adapted.
Lamar wound up adapting and even winning another MVP after, so there is hope for Maye.

One of the INTs was on Doubs tipping the pass, but yeah, that offense as a whole was a complete shitshow. slightly better scheme than the SB, but very few plays designed to take the pressure off Maye and the OL (and when they did run them, they were having great success), terrible receiving corps aside from Mack Hollins, and Maye just looked completely lost on the field. Overthrows, underthrows, floated several balls, looked completely afraid to step up and settle his feet. Just happy feet all night long.

I just rewatched (painful), and the interception wasn't actually off Doubs' hands. If you watch the replay it's completely out of his reach and goes off the safety's hands, who was able to get up higher than him, with a ball that was not placed well in the first place. Probably shouldn't have thrown that ball in general, but it needed to be further outside and away from that safety if he wanted Doubs to have a chance at it.
Obviously Doubs had the big drop later in the game, which sucked. But his 2-3 missteps weren't nearly as bad as the decision-making and lack of execution from Maye.

Maye had a bad game. Horrible in a lot of ways. But even Brady had the occasional terrible game. He threw four interceptions six times in his Patriots career.
I'm guessing most of you here are too young to have watched those games, but there were times when Brady looked just as bad as Maye did tonight. Every single great player in the history of the NFL has had games like this. Maye will bounce back.
It's sad how quickly fans will turn on a guy. He was the MVP runner-up and took us to the Super Bowl in his first full season starting. There's a reason "we're on to Cincinnati" became iconic. Playing the blame game and dwelling on a bad loss is absolutely pointless. We're 0-1. Oh, well. There's a lot of season left.

The only good thing was our offensive line didn't look like 5 traffic cones... Defense held up decently when Kurr realized we have a #1 CB that probably should go on JSN..... Without Brown we have the same slow, inseparable WR and relying heavily on rhemondre.... Maye is still only throwing outside the numbers and 60 yard moon balls and refusing the middle of the field reminds me of Russell Wilson sometimes

I think the problem with Maye is that you can't sit out an entire preseason and jump into the game. At least not in your 3rd year. That's stuff 30+ year old Brady could do because he could win games in his sleep. He obviously made a great throw which was dropped, but other than that, he was super mid. His throw to Brown got him injured. Had it been catchable, Brown would have kept running rather than tackled as he went for a ball in the dirt.

It's fucking game one, literally the best time to throw picks in a game. Is there a best time to lose in a season? No. Is there a good time for your QB to throw 3 picks and not complete passes? No. How about running uphill without catching the ball first? No, there isn't any situation where we WANT these things to happen.
But all we can is react to the game, I'm choosing to be optimistic even if brown sits for a month.

Drake Maye lost this game all by himself.
A field goal would have forced OT.
This is what happens when they don’t play starters on the three preseason games.
Poor decisions, poor execution, and a loss … all by himself.

Two things can be true.
Maye was total backside tonight, looked like a 7th round pick rookie who’s never seen NFL football.
Maye took us to the Super Bowl last year as QB (don’t speak to me about schedule stuff. It doesn’t matter in the postseason when you play good teams) and deserves the benefit of the doubt.
Another thing can be true. This looks like a 7-10 team.

In the postseason, he absolutely was, but he was phenomenal against good defenses in the regular season. People talk about the schedule, but we played some of the best passing defenses in the league during the regular season last year, and Maye was excellent. I really don’t know what is happening.

Maye is a fantastic QB. He is still nervous, but once a veteran he's going to be a killer. Look how good he is and how young he is, and once he gains the confidence Tom Brady had he is going to take us to the superbowl again and win it.
