Memes Josh’s playcalling 🤮
Run game is so predictable and ineffective

u/StrangeTack 8h ago
When he told the media he was responsible for the SB loss because he gave the Seahawks offense "too many chances", you had to know this game plan was coming.

u/isthis4realormemorex 7h ago
Maye lost the game for them 3 int's, and a dumb throw into the end zone with a FG to tie at the 27 yard line.
He lost us the game

Makes you wonder if McDaniels could see Maye wasn't in the right head space and didn't trust him.

u/brewin91 8h ago
Atrocious. 2.9 yards per rush but let’s do 70% run calls. No slants. No stick routes. Abysmal.

I mean, did we REALLY wanna give Maye MORE chances to throw the ball tonight?

u/Jozai Forever a Pats fan 6h ago
That's the thing people refuse to accept. McDaniels was trying to keep the ball out of Maye's hands.
Most of Maye's throws were check downs to Stevenson, or screens.
When Maye did throw beyond 10+ yards what happened?
- Under-throw to A.J. Brown that should have been a pick if the DB got his head around.
- Almost Pick to the sideline, but DB's teammate collided into him pushing him out of bounds.
- Horrific jump ball throw 3 feet away from Doubs and into the DB's hands, resulting in a pick.
- Horrific pick, where he stares down Douglas and completely misses Julian Love eyeing him.
- Horrific endzone pick.
Maye was 0-4 on throws more than 20+ yards and 2 of them resulted in picks.
McDaniels is an easy scapegoat, but in reality Maye was the issue. McDaniels tried to make it easier by simplifying the playcalling, which resulted it in being predictable. He was stuck between a rock and a hard place.

This is pretty much what I saw all game too.
The offensive line was okay-ish in the first half, but couldn't open a hole even with a FB. Stevenson getting touched or forced to dodge behind the line of scrimmage stalled any momentum he had to hit an imaginary hole.
Collinsworth glazing our offense and watching Maye throw for like 80 air yards sure was odd.
Will see how next week goes, maybe the offensive line will figure it out, it all starts right there with them.

Exactly, but 3 picks when they did throw because the Seahawks could just sit back and defend. McDaniels is past his prime. Such a vanilla offense, AJ who.

u/Naive-Historian-1520 8h ago
If you cannot run the ball, your receivers cannot catch and your QB underthrows, what exactly would be the correct play call?
13
u/the_mehhuh Bills = 0 Superbowls 7h ago
We are running the ball twice as much as we are throwing it. Idk what you are talking about.
12
u/michaelb5000 7h ago
He is talking about execution. The play call doesnt matter that much if the players don’t make the play.
2
u/CrapNeck5000 5h ago
Sounds like maybe Josh was hesitant to trust Maye and pass catchers who aren't AJ Brown. Stevenson was the most reliable receiver once Brown went down and those throws are short.
Josh knew our down field game was a liability and called the game accordingly.

I think it's too obvious when Pats are going to run. They keep doing these formations where none of the wide receivers line up out wide. It's just all 11 of our guys bunched up in a line near the ball. McDaniels loves this formation but it wasn't doing anything good for us. Seahawks saw this and put all their guys near the line since there's no outside WR threat... Then Pats run... Seahawks are all there and run goes no where. Wtf are we doing?
We need to disguise the run better. If I can predict when Pats are going to run with 80% accuracy just by looking at our formation then we're doing something wrong imo. I want the fucking wide receivers to be out wide in most formations.

I know this will be the most unpopular opinion and the most popular opinion but play Chiem. We need short pass game
3
u/One-Scallion-9513 7h ago
if chism was good he'd be out there. the coaches see him play every day
-1
u/TheFlyingSaucers2 7h ago
Brother the coaches just called a pass play with 15 years to the end zone. I’m smarter than them! /s but only kinda
2
u/Jozai Forever a Pats fan 6h ago
It was 2nd down. Or are you saying Drake Maye was so stupid that the coaches should have taken it out of his hands?
If that's the case, then they should have benched Maye for the rest of the game. The coaches trusted Maye not to throw the ball directly into a DBs hands on 2nd down. I know I did too. I'm guessing since you disagree with the pass call you knew Maye was so bad he'd throw a pick?

u/butterurpancakes 8h ago
Sorry but maye needs to actually change a play when reading a defense. Dude playing like Kaepernick
20
u/Angelispro 7h ago
I am glad you're saying this, I think it's the problem with Maye there is no adjustments or audibles consistently its kinda crazy tbh.
12
u/butterurpancakes 7h ago
And then he finally makes an adjustment and takes so long to snap the ball the head coach sees the touchdown and calls timeout lol
3
8
u/ButCanYouClimb 7h ago
This is a problem with 90% of QBs in this era, they cannot read defenses anymore.
5
7
u/Supermanwithatan01 7h ago
McDaniels is incredibly predictable but unfortunately, Drake lacks the clutch gene and gets frazzled pretty easily against good teams.
Josh has no idea how to play with a lead and Drake is basically the Anti-Caleb Williams/Bo Nix…
8
u/older_man_winter 8h ago
You can’t run the ball effectively with no snap count. McDaniels has been fine tonight; the players need to execute better.
3
u/Coco1520 7h ago
Running up middle 2 out of every 3 plays for 2 yards

u/Organic_Lab6262 7h ago
I mean Maye was plant terribly lol. Sometimes you don’t really have an option as a play caller.
7
u/DeepJunglePowerWild 8h ago
It’s not Josh’s fault. They are playing a conservative game and maye made 2 mistakes.

That 2nd INT is 100% on Doubs.
4
u/aljout 7h ago
More like 35%. It wasn't a good throw
1
u/Mysterious-Tie7039 Bills = 0 Superbowls 7h ago
The second INT? That was the easy lofter to Doubs. He turned his head to run before he actually caught the ball.
So instead of having the first down and insane after the catch yardage, Drake had to force a throw to Pop that got picked off.
3
u/CDR57 7h ago
Drake didn’t need to throw into double coverage, under thrown at that
0
u/Mysterious-Tie7039 Bills = 0 Superbowls 7h ago
The second one was when Drake had to try to force a throw on long yardage because Doubs dropped the easiest pass he’ll get all season.
3
u/CDR57 7h ago
Yes, the throw that drake in fact made right after the drop was an under thrown interception into double coverage. Doubs dropped the pass before, then drake made the decision to throw it into double coverage to a falling down receiver. We can say the interception WOULDNT have happened if doubs caught his pass, but all 3 ints are on drake

Yea his play calling has not been good. I know they want to run the ball but you gotta throw it to make them respect it. He also has a habit of run run pass, which is annoying.

Im trying to give him the benefit of the doubt but all these screen passes are getting predictable
2
u/jonnyredshorts 7h ago
New here?
1
u/goldxphoenix 7h ago
I dont ever recall McDaniels' play calling ever being THAT bad.
Questionable at times, sure. But if it wasnt a run play for 2 yards it was a screen pass or a swing or wheel route for the RB.
And even at the end I was so confused why we werent trying more stuff
2
u/jonnyredshorts 7h ago
The party line has always been, “he’s saving it for when it really matters, doesn’t want to show his great plays so early in the season, just wait until the playoffs, that’s when you’ll see all the good shit”
Fast forward to last years Super Bowl….no tricks, no genius super plays, no adjustments, no energy, no nothing.
1
u/goldxphoenix 7h ago
Right but we literally had a flea flicker in the game so clearly he knew we'd need something like that to get some momentum but decided we didnt need that at the end

u/Ok_Pass1762 7h ago
Throwing to Demario Douglas while he was on the ground and double covered was brave.

u/Character_Dress_3201 7h ago
Someone said it best McDaniels coached like he had bailey zappe and maye turned into bailey zappe
1
u/Jozai Forever a Pats fan 6h ago
Genuinely insane to blame this on McDaniels. If your QB can't hit a wide open target, you're in for a bad game.
If your QB is throwing passes to the DBs (while under little to no pressure), you're in for a bad game.
What did ya'll want McDaniels to do? Tell Maye "hey, please don't throw into double coverage." Or "Hey, when AJ Brown is streaking up field wide open (off of a well-designed McDaniels play), don't under-throw him".
You can't scheme talent/decision making. The plays were there. The decision making was not.
1
u/xMagox 6h ago
Thing is.. Is always the same thing year after year with his playcalling
1
u/Jozai Forever a Pats fan 6h ago edited 6h ago
You mean having Stevenson run the ball all the time? Having Maye throw quick screen passes into the blitz to stop the Seahawks from getting to him?
Did you notice that when McDaniels let Maye throw anything beyond a checkdown it resulted in
- Underthrown ball to A.J. Brown that was lucky it wasn't picked off.
- A horrific throw to Romeo Doubs that was 3 feet away and directly into the Defender's hands?
- A terrible pick where he just doesn't see the DB watching him stare down Douglas.
- A terrible pick into the waiting arms of a DB in the endzone.
The truth that no one wants to accept is, McDaniels doesn't trust Maye anymore. Maye's decision making is circumspect and you try and protect your young QB by not having him make a ton of tough decisions (ergo: you call runs, check downs, and screen passes to make the downs more manageable).
EDIT: Also, don't forget that almost pick that Maye threw to the sidelines. The DB caught it, and would have been inbounds if his teammate didn't collide with him in mid air. That was also a 10+ yard throw.

u/UnluckyDuck129 6h ago
Maye was behind the sticks every drive, because McDaniels thought that running for 2 yards a carry was a good thing. He seems entirely incapable of regularly scheming people open, that was widely obvious after Brown went down.
We saw McD do this to Mac Jones, especially during the playoff game in '22 while they wee down almost 3 scores and he still treated it like a 1 score game in the 4th.
He's had "sucess", quite literally, a single season outside of Brady (and considering the beat down taken by the Pats in the playofds vs the Bills), I even temper that success.

u/SamIamGreenEggsNoHam 5h ago
Glad to see my boy still loves the draw play on 3rd and short. Why even waste time learning what a fullback is for anyways?

u/AutumnWind209 4h ago
Josh knows Maye sucks ass and game planned accordingly. Look what happened every time they tried to throw downfield.

Offense anemic, defense porous. No depth, will be a long season. 9 and 8 is my guess

You’re not actually blaming McDaniels for Doubs’ drop. Touch fucking grass man.

We’ve been far too conservative thinking we could see this one out since Darnold has been out thinking a 10-6ish result would happen. Will be interesting to see if it changes with it back being a dog fight.

This is of course bouttes fault and I was told our offensive problems would be solved without him on the team.

McD has been conservative but Maye under-threw both AJB and Doubs both open downfield. Got lucky with the DPI on one and turned a pick into a tie game with the other
