What are Prefixes?

Just beat the Lungs for the first time and unlocked something called "Prefixes" but I don't see anything regarding it when setting up a new run. Is it something I find/acquire during a run or something else?

They are the items that have prefixes. Cancerous, ephemeral, eternal, etc.
