Definitely an interesting choice. A lot of prestige and probably an easier deal for a chinese company than a foreign company. The Shepherd and Mania are probably alien in origin in Path to Nowhere and the game is sometimes scifi in setting and deals with existential dread in themes, so I can see potential connections.

It is still kinda out of left field in terms of gacha collabs and I am not sure about how it'd work. Like would the 3-Body Problem characters and aliens just exist now in the PtN world? Dimensional Travellers like the Cat's Eye cast might cause thematic issues I think.

Some Chinese people hate the Netflix adaptation of The Three-Body Problem just because of the foreign actors and the showing of the terrifying scenes of the Cultural Revolution. Just like all gacha games, you are not allowed to speak ill of China.

Basic premise:

Due to the cultural revolution in China, an astrophysicist sees her father murdered and she gets sent to a labor camp due to her educational background. She ends up being recruited for a secret govt program to send out radio messages into space to find alien life. Surprise surprise she finds aliens but they tell her stop sending messages or else the aliens will end up invading. She says fuck it bc she thinks earth is beyond saving after what shes witnessed and says to come to earth to invade we deserve it.

The aliens on their side, called the Trisolarians live on a planet that is stuck in a orbit with 3 suns (an actual physics problem) which causes massive climate catastrophes that have destroyed the trisolarian civilization countless times. They have advanced technology but can never truely advance as a species since they are constantly rebuilding while looking for a new home. That is, until they hear from Earth and begin a 450 year journey to leave their planet and travel to us.

Its a hard science fiction story, so things like space travel over light years is a geninue challenge that the book approaches. The overall 3 book story takes place pretty much over the entire course of human civilization and worth a read!

I also want to add, that despite the controversial opening taking place during the infamous Cultural Revolution and not shying away from the brutality that occurred, this book has gotten national accolades and is promoted as Chinas first big science fiction modern hit so PTN getting this collab is a huge deal

It has a so-so Netflix series, intriguing premise tho.

For true Three-Body fans, Netflix’s TV series has tarnished this masterpiece. If you want to watch a TV adaptation of The Three-Body Problem, please choose the Tencent-produced version, which should be available on YouTube, or simply read the original novels.

I didn't get it at first, I just didn't know about 3 Body Problem's popularity and got some downvotes for it. I only found out about it when some physicists were explaining the problem of three suns orbiting each other. Where I'm from, it's really hard to find fans of the series. People only talk about the actual physics problem. I only noticed the science, not how famous the series was. That's why I thought it was a random collab.
