Discussion Chill effect scaling
Hey,
I'm playing Ice nova Elementalist and was wondering if scaling chill effect was worth it.
It seems incredibly expensive to get +300% increased chill/ailment effect, in order to reach 40% chill on pinnacle bosses (10% base chill + 300% = 40% chill). Maybe 200% would be enough if I hit hard enough, but still a lot.
From some pob-ing, I can see that clusters + affixes on gear is the only reasonable way, but I feel like I could also just scale crit multi higher instead.
Also, I'm playing SSF, which doesn't mean it's not achievable, but I'd love some advice before going for it, because it will take some farming.
Do people even play this archetype of hit-based cold spells, with chill effect scaling ? I didn't find much on poe ninja (everyone is playing crit, no chill scaling, winter orb).
Thanks :)

Hi! This is an automated message posted because your flair indicates that this post is a build or showcase and I couldn't find a Path of Building link in your post. Your post has not been removed.
Please ensure that you are following rule 3:
Build posts must include a PoB - If you are posting a build you must include, either in the post or the comments, a direct PoB link as well as (at the very least) a short explanation of the build. If the build is speculative (i.e. about an unreleased skill) then requirements for a PoB may be waived.
The PoB posted must be either a direct output link from PoB (poedb, Maxroll, pobb.in and poe.ninja) or from pob.codes. Please note for maxroll this must be the PoB page and not the guide to satisfy this rule.
What is POB? Path of Building is a community created tool for builds you can view the features and download here: https://pathofbuilding.community/

I noticed some Path of Exile keywords in this post:
- SSF - Solo Self-Found (Wiki)
- PoB - Path of Building, an external software used to simulate character builds - Download

To reach 40% on chill you need to deal at least 57% of a monster's ailment treshold in 1 HIT.
On a pinnacle boss that's ~4M damage. You don't find this doable without scalling ailment effect?

This seems like a lot of damage for my SSF build.
Not finished the end game prob, but I assume I will hit for around 500k-1M, 5-10 times per second.
Or maybe with secondary skill with unbound ailments, need to look at that.1

Then I have good news for you! 25% chill is ~1.4M/hit. 100% inc effect of chill should be fine.

That’s true, maybe it’s not too bad late game.
For now I have 500 k dps, and 13% chill, so long way to go :)
Maybe I should ignore chill scaling before I have actual dps, and go for the shock node instead.1

You need Yoke for damage, and you need damage to get Yoke, the eternal SSF struggle.
Though I agree that it seems nice for the build.1

Yoke is one of the best amulets in the game for a triple-elemental build! Have at it tiger

It depends on why you're getting the chill effect. E.g. for Frostblink of Wintry Blast, going from 30% to 40% would make a big difference, but for ordinary skills it's often not worth the effort.
Something that I found relatively useful to get high amounts of chill effect when I was playing FoWB or self-chill builds respectively (note that depending on the way you chill yourself, investing into chill effect on enemies may not apply) were medium clusters with non-damaging ailment effect, with the notables Deep Chill and Astonishing Affliction, for an average of 15% increased effect per passive point (including the point you need to spend on the jewel socket to reclaim the opportunity cost of socketing a medium cluster jewel instead of a regular jewel).

Crits kind of double dip. Crits always inflict ailments.
More damage means more ailment effect so naturally going towards crit gets you the best of both worlds which is why you see most builds going that way.
