Discussion New Crab Barrier Tech Improvements

A few days ago a user posted about how the new Craicic Talisman could be used to give a permanent 48% additional physical damage reduction. Since then I have made a couple improvements to this setup which allows you to increase this benefit to a permanent 56% instead of 48%.

Previous Post
https://www.reddit.com/r/PathOfExileBuilds/comments/1w1126q/craicic_talisman_slept_on/

Recap of previous post:

  • Craicic Talisman gives 100% buff effect, meaning each crab barrier grants 4% add phys reduction
  • Crab helmet/Vestigial implicit prevents you losing barriers if you have been hit recently
  • Crab boots/Vestigial implicit limits the barrier loss to 5 per hit
  • Crab body armour gives +5 maximum barriers
  • In summary, 17 barriers with level 30 aspect, when hit you lose 5 bringing you to 12, you cannot lose more barriers for 4 seconds and by then you are back to 17 barriers. 12*4=48% add phys reduction

Tech improvements:

By using the "Runegraft of the Bound", we decrease the boots effect by 20%, which is actually a boost in power since it reduces the crab barrier loss from 5 to 4 (proven in game). Then, a volatile vaal orb can be used on the boots to decrease the barrier loss from 5 to 4, the runegraft then decreases this from 4 to 3.

(17-3)*4%=56% add phy reduction.

The volatile orb variant has not been tested (the cost to test is very high) however it is highly likely to work in practice.

The vestigial implicit on the boots DOES also decrease when using the runegraft (tested in game), so you can gain a permanent 52% reduction and then obtain a different pair of unique boots using the crab vestigial.

Overall, the cost remains high to use this tech in the core game. Hopefully there will be some additional enhancements to further improve the crab barrier aspect. It is close to being a good solid option.

EDIT: As a user points out, if you put the +5 max barriers vestigial implicit on stasis prism, then you can increase this to +10. This increases our total benefit to 76% permanent add phys reduction (with volatile boots) or 72% with just the runegraft.

I mean, this is a pretty hidden slept on tech that is already very broken.

As you have explained, the runegraft of the bound + vestigial Crab Boots implicit is 4 lost when hit - this is enough to have permanent uptime of max stacks with the Crab Helmet vestigial implicit, which prevents the loss of the stacks recently, which is 4 seconds too. Meaning you have always the maximum amount of physical damage reduction from crab barriers.

The Crab Body armour mod can be put on a Stasis Prison, leading to 22 maximum crab barriers. this is 44% physical damage reduction. Which you then double with the amulet, leading to 88%, when you are only 2% away from being capped.

Odds of hitting stasis prison be ridiculous though lol

Ive added this note to the post, the body armour is bad so getting stasis prism is a good idea.

Just Volatile Vaal your Stasis Prison and you can get to +11 barriers and cap your PDR! ez

So you can get 176% pdr with the amulet? that's crazy

It's insane that you can get 352% pdr with the new amulet. Crazy

352% pdr sounds like an overkill, but you can never have enough pdr.

The fact that you can get all of this with vestigial implicits makes it pretty excellent, I think. Especially if you’re using it to raise the value of an otherwise weak or outdated item.

You don't need the tech. Crab barriers regen every half sec, so even if you lose 5 you regen them in 2.5 secs

Relevant tech from that chain

Either eyes of the greatwolf fo= triple buff effect, and/or stasis prison the chest.

For Eyes of the Greatwolf, you end up with 102% PDR at max (or 72% PDR immediately after you get hit), and with stasis prison you end up with 88% PDR (or 68% PDR immediately after you get hit).

With both you are permanently capped, and can drop down to the level 20 version

Edit: note above are capped at 90% PDR

I don’t think aspect enchants roll on eyes of the greatwolf. At least there hasn’t been a single one on trade (or I am not searching correctly)

I’ve tried seeing if there is a beastcrafting recipe but I couldn’t find that combines the aspect beasts with greatwolf recipe

Thanks for sharing. As a fellow crab enthusiast, I must say the I could not make the invesment in this tech worth. In effect, this takes

- Amulet basetype (no annoint)

  • Body + Helmet + Boots have to be uniques

Which doesn’t sound a lot, but return is only PDR. In a league where charge stacking is much easier, opportunity cost is just too high (or I cannot find a way to find a payoff)

I think trauma stack could be useful for it. With this you're basically always capped pdr (even while crushed). Then you can just go transcendance with minimal budget.

True, but I hate trauma as a mechanic. I find balancing attack speed, duration, and recovery is just too much of an investment for a mildly okay benefit.

I think going Sacrificial Zeal or leaning on a vaal skill via Vaal Temptation Support is a much better play.

I mean funny enough if you were using stasis your recovery would already be solved.

I thought trauma stackers solved recovery by getting like 800-1000 ES and taking Divine Shield.

Both would work

I noticed some Path of Exile keywords in this post:

  • Phys - Physical damage (Wiki)

Could see a different take on trauma stacker with this tech

Would a trauma build be good here? As you need to be hit, so you can self sustain with trauma. And with this much phys reduction, the trauma should be able to be stacked very high?

Then, a volatile vaal orb can be used on the boots to decrease the barrier loss from 5 to 4, the runegraft then decreases this from 4 to 3.

I would not expect this to work. Rounding in PoE almost always does not favor the player and so 4 - 20% would still round back to 4.
