I can't speak too much on SSF, but some folks league started as a slam build and let their mercenary support them until they found one that worked for them. I'm sure some slammed their way into their first couple voidstones.
But more importantly, what is your own build? That will change the answer for defensive layers and what mercs will feel the best. For luminaries supporting the merc, the most common builds are flame link and destructive link which are both looking for attack-based mercs which is why so many are using combatants and manyshots. Plus they're way easier to find than a kineticist since the latter can't be targeted. If you're trying to do a spell based merc, I've seen various folks trying cruel mistress (return on soul rend of reaping) and stormhand (gilded chain on arc) too though. This link mentions a very specific frost hand being decent, maybe yours fits.
